Does food or a toy work better when training a dog?
A new study published in Animals looked to answer that question. There were 10 dogs in the study and they looked to see which food item and which toy was their favourite from 6 different options, and their preferred was used for the study.
Dogs were then taught to touch their nose against the palm of a person’s hand.
To see if food worked better, they were tested to see how many nose touches they would do when given either their preferred food or preferred toy. Dogs would do more hand touches when given their favourite food compared to their favourite toy, although one dog liked toys more.
How can we use this information? It’s important to remember to see what our dogs like best when training, and recognize that different situations may require better treats/toys/attention (for example, if a dog is stressed at the vet clinic). It’s also important to remember that there can be a lot of individual differences between dogs.
Do you see what a dog prefers most when working with them? Let me know how in the comments!

Dogs have a remarkable ability to understand human emotions. They can read our facial expressions and body language, which is why they often seem to know when we're happy, sad, or stressed. This emotional intelligence makes them excellent companions for emotional support and therapy work. 🐕🐕🦺🐾
