Fire safety when in a resort or temporary lodging starts with a quick look around the kitchen. Get familiar with space, know where the fire extinguisher is, keep flammables away from the stove, and never leave cooking unattended. A one-minute check helps keep your vacation safe and stress free. https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/general-food-safety-tips/cooking-safety.html

At noon, Friday, May 15, campfires and cooking fires will be allowed in the Parksville Fire Protection Area subject to applicable bylaws. Public is strongly encouraged to exercise extreme caution with any open fire. Beach fires and consumer fireworks are prohibited. BC Wildfire Service www.parksvillefirerescue.ca
Current and forecast conditions have shifted since the Coastal Fire Centre initially implemented the Category 1 campfire prohibition earlier this May, resulting in cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard throughout the region. Because of this, Category 1 campfires will be once again permitted under the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction as of Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. (noon).
Although the fire risk has decreased for the region, human-caused wildfires are still possible and entirely preventable. Please take the time to learn how to enjoy a campfire safely: gov.bc.ca/saferburning
Category 2 and 3 open burning and select activities and equipment remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. For full details, please refer to the following information bulletin: https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/campfires-permitted-across-coastal-fire-centre-due-to-decreased-fire-risk/

Unexpected dinner guest? If a grease fire starts, cover the pan with lid and turn off heat. Never use water as flames can flare up instantly. Smothering the fire is the safest first step, and if the flames continue to grow, call 911 and get everyone out. https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/home-fire-safety/cooking
