Travel During COVID-19
Now that the border restrictions are loosening up, and lifting of travel restrictions possibly on the horizon, many Canadians are now thinking about travelling, either abroad or within Canada. We thought it would be a good idea to visit some considerations for you to keep in mind.
COVID-19 Coverage when travelling
The Government of Canada's recommendation is still to avoid non-essential travel. Please be sure to check the Government website for updated information on Testing and quarantine. https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/health-safety/travel-health-notices/221
Are you covered for COVID-19 while travelling?
Generally speaking , insurers are covering most of the common COVID-19 medical expenses however you should always confirm your coverage with your insurer prior to departure.
Will a COVID-19 test be covered by Insurance?
Its best to always confirm your specific coverage with your provider however the general answer is NO. You may be required to pay out of pocket for any COVID-19 mandatory viral testing in order to re-enter the country. Depending on your travel destination, you may also be required to test prior to leaving the country as well.
Travelling within Canada?
You still need travel insurance! This is a common misconception that Canadians don't need Travel Insurance when travelling within their own country. This is not the case, as each province has different healthcare systems with varying coverage, so therefore many emergency expenses may not be covered.
If you have Group Benefits coverage through your employer you do have travel insurance as part of your healthcare coverage. However if you do not, you will then need to purchase individual travel insurance.
Please read this article from our partner BBD in regards to travelling within Canada.
