I thought hard about how to express what needs to be said about climate, the oil sands, and Canada's future in my long piece in today's Toronto Star. Short summary: The climate crisis is accelerating as is energy transition. 🇨🇦 is blessed with natural & human resources to build the future. But the oil sands are taking us for fools. Time to be on the right side of history
Unfortunately you can't put newspaper links on Facebook anymore (bonkers!) but you can find it online at Toronto Star if you have a subscription, get the online copy through your local library using PressReader, or get a hard copy of today's paper. And you can find me on Bluesky!

I thought hard about how to express what needs to be said. The climate crisis is accelerating as is energy transition. 🇨🇦 is blessed with natural & human resources to build the future. But the oil sands are taking us for fools. Time to be on the right side of history. Online and in tomorrow's Saturday Star.
As environment minister, I believed the oil sands sector would help us save the planet. I was wrong. Former Canadian environment minister Catherine McKenna on what she learned in four years leading Canada’s fight against climate change

It may surprise many but I was fortunate to have Brian Mulroney as a mentor. He taught me about how to take practical action to conserve the environment & grow the economy - and that nothing is more important than building a cleaner future for our kids. A true conservative.
Brian Mulroney knew something important that today's conservative politicians are ignoring Today's politicians who call themselves "conservatives" could take a lesson from their predecessors on the value of protecting the environment, Catherine McKenna writes.

Great piece by . I get women politicians not wanting to highlight the online hate/abuse/threats they receive- I felt that too.
But if we don't call it out - men too - then it gets normalized. And it's not normal. It hurts women and our democracy. It needs to stop.
And if Canadian parliamentarians are so concerned about online hate against politicians - especially against women - could you please follow the example of Europe and finally hold Big Tech to account and pass the Online Harms Bill this year. Just do it.
(And if you're hurling abuse at me on FB, you're just proving the point.)
Why Canadian Politics Is Still Unsafe For Female Politicians Online hate against Canadian women in politics is on the rise, and despite cross-party agreement that it’s a problem, little action has been taken on the issue. Here’s why.

We have a wonderful planet. Let's make 2024 the year we dig deep and finally take the action we need to protect it. ❤️🌎

Yes was historic by finally calling for the end of the fossil fuel era & real action this decade with 3x renewable energy. And establishment of hard fought loss and damage fund with initial funding is a win. But no clear phaseout and climate equity, justice & funding for most vulnerable still seriously lacking.
But for everything (good & bad), text is words on paper. Limiting warming to 1.5C requires governments, biz, investors acting on science now & being held accountable. The 🌎 is watching especially our kids. We know what we need to do. Time to finally do it.
