interesting blog on Kingston 2GB Microsd failure investigation

On MicroSD Problems « bunnie's blog The microSD ware for January 2010 was not an incidental post. It is actually snapshot of a much longer forensic investigation to find the ground truth behind some irregular Kingston memory cards.

...so you have a OLD Toshiba GAS/GAX series hard disk, and it is not spinning or attempting to.......heat works sometimes...but what you really need is a Dremel with a diamond bit, to grind down the steel lip holding the motor cap on, then drill a small divot beside the cap for prying the steel cap up, clean the inevitable dust and place one small drop of sewing machine oil on top of the impeller shaft and recap, you may need to hold the cap on with pressure when its operating....voila data

Backup! Backup! Backup!

had an old client contact me this week, raving over a previous recovery back in 2009 and now they have a Broken IMAC with a 1TB hard disk that failed and Apple no longer services, they only needed Quicken Data and everything else was backup, i estimated a cost of $400-500.
Opened IMAC with suction cup, removed all LCD mounting screws and several wires at the back giving access to the SEAGATE 1TB 7200.12, a notorious disk for FIRMWARE corruption, Running very hot and crashing. Once removed, analysis revealed SMART triggered, bad sectors throughout, but the majority of errors in the first 40,000,000 sectors. Started imaging from Sector 40 million to 1.953Billion, choosing to skip the bad sector region first, by morning i had to 1.850 Billion sectors and stopped, due to heavy sector damage. I returned to the beginning of the disk and continued copying sector 0 - 40 million, recovered with 386 errors( that's like copying a 40 million page book, with 386 pages missing)

Used a recovery tool to mount the recovered mac VOLUME, and extract the USER profile totaling 650GB. Contacted the Client and relayed the good news , they asked for the date of the Quicken data, which i gladly replied and said " oh, i have that data, i no longer need the recovery, thank you and cancelled.

A customer looking to transfer a collection of 3 old laptop hard disks
,
Disk 1 : Seagate ST9077A 60MB, from a AST laptop computer
Disk 2 Toshiba MK1724FCV 260MB, from a COMPAQ laptop
Disk 3 IBM DARA-212000 12GB, from a TOSHIBA laptop

Disk 1 mounted but had 3 boot files only, and a drive label of "HOST for C"...this indicates a compression tool used and needs to boot from this disk to enable access to the compressed files created with Microsofts "DOUBLESPACE", ALL recovered

Disk 2, mounted and had bad sectors, but all recovered

Disk 3, mounted but EMPTY, Obviously formatted. Ran R-STUDIO for a full recovery of previous contents.

happy customer

To this job i had to use one of my very first service computers, a AMD 100MHZ system with 16MB of ram, with no usbs and BIOS that could understand the early IDE formats.
