June is Men’s Mental Health Month.
The skilled trades can be physically demanding, but they can also take a toll mentally. Long hours, job pressures, time away from family, and the expectation to “tough it out” can make it difficult to speak up when you’re struggling. It’s important to remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
This month, we encourage open conversations, raising awareness, and working together to break the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.
If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. The Building Trades Members Assistance Program (BTMAP) is here to help.
📞 Office: (613) 742-7962
🚨 Emergency: (613) 742-5257

Remember: You are not alone. Reach out, speak up, and help us break the stigma around mental health.

On Tuesday, Local 47 had the opportunity to host a tour focused on strengthening relationships between service providers and community organizations.
This initiative was built around four important goals: Learn. Connect. Collaborate. Build the Future.
Together, we explored the opportunities available within the skilled trades for Urban Ottawa Indigenous youth. By fostering meaningful connections and sharing knowledge, we can help create a stronger, more inclusive future for the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

The building trades community has lost a dedicated advocate, respected leader, and true friend with the passing of Richard.
For many years, Richard served the labour movement with passion and purpose as Director of Community Relations for the Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec Building Trades Council. He believed deeply in the value of unionized skilled trades and worked tirelessly to promote the interests of working people. Whether building relationships within the industry, supporting community initiatives, or advocating for safer workplaces, Richard approached every challenge with determination, professionalism, and genuine care for others.
Richard's impact extended far beyond his title. He was someone people could count on—a trusted voice, a supportive colleague, and a steady presence who always put people first. His commitment to strengthening the building trades and creating opportunities for others helped leave a lasting mark on our industry and the communities we serve.
Those who knew Richard will remember not only his dedication to his work, but also the character he brought to it. He carried himself with humility, kindness, and respect, treating everyone he met with warmth and sincerity. If Richard met you once, he remembered your name. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel valued and important, no matter who they were. His welcoming smile, genuine interest in others, and sense of humour made him a friend to many and a respected figure throughout the labour community.
On behalf of SMART Local 47, we extend our deepest condolences to Richard's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him. We will miss his unwavering dedication, his friendship, and the warm smile that brightened every room he entered. His contributions to the building trades will not be forgotten, and his legacy of service, compassion, and respect for others will continue to inspire those who follow.
Rest in Peace Richard, we will miss you.
