Two Commissioned pieces. A client wanted two portraits from the same photo to give as gifts. This was a nice project to work on!

When using pencil crayons, it helps to turn it slightly to always use the sharp point. Once the pencil tip has become fully dull, sharpen again. I call this "exhausting the point" which I have learned from other artists.

Instead of using a blending stump, you can blend graphite with a paintbrush (hog hair is what I use) to preserve some texture.

Before adding my next layer, I smooth out the graphite with a brush. The first layer for me is always separating the darks from the lights.

Why do I focus on portraits?

I focus on portraits because, when looking into the eyes and face of another person, or animal, I feel a sense of connection. I'm not trying to instill life in their image, but rather, bring the life and light that already exists, to the surface.
