Don't store firewood in your basement or up against your house. Carpenter ants love to hang out in the wood pile, especially if some of the pieces had rot.

Whether you own or lease your hot water heater, ensure the anode is changed according to the manufactures recommendations. This used to be a 3/4 inch magnesium anode. Don't let yours get this worn. It protects the steel tank when the glass coating wears through.

Make sure you clear your vents. They should be a minimum of 18 inches off the ground, but this is rarely enough for the snow we get here in Ottawa. You can lose hot water and heat if these vents are blocked. Carbon Monoxide can possibly build up in the home as well, if the safety systems on the furnace or hot water tank fail.

Don't store firewood indoors; mold can form on your walls!
