Meet Izzy! One of our incredible Ontario Tech Engineering alumni!

After earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics Engineering and a Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, she has since built an exciting career in automation and innovation.

Her master's thesis, “Proof of Concept for Computer Vision-Based Failure Detection and Print Resumption in Fused Filament Additive Manufacturing”, explored how computer vision can allow for recovery of a 3D print after an abrupt failure, improving the reliability of 3D printing processes.

Following graduation, she worked as an Automation Engineer at Caterpillar (CAT), developing autonomous navigation and operation systems for mining equipment. Today, she is a Research & Development Engineer at ACE, where she helps test and validate innovative ideas.

Outside of her professional work, she continues to make an impact in the STEM community as a FIRST Robotics alumni who has served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Durham College FIRST Robotics Competition event for the past three years, helping create meaningful experiences for students and inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators.

We're proud to celebrate alumni like her who are advancing technology, leading with purpose, and giving back to their communities.

Today, the Government of Canada launched the Nuclear Energy Strategy, reinforcing the critical role nuclear energy will play in Canada’s future.

As this announcement was being made, some of our graduate students were visiting the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site in Chalk River, hearing from Dr. Sourena Golesorkhi (Class of 2008), one of many Ontario Tech Nuclear Engineering alumni helping to advance Canada’s nuclear industry.

For more than 20 years, Ontario Tech has been at the centre of nuclear engineering education in Canada as the first and only university in the country to offer an accredited undergraduate Nuclear Engineering degree. Our highly skilled graduates contribute across the nuclear sector—from research and innovation to operations, regulation, and energy production.

Our longstanding partnerships with industry leaders such as Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, utilities, regulators, and supply chain organizations ensure our students are immersed in the realities of the sector from day one. As Canada’s nuclear industry continues to grow, we are proud to develop the talent that will drive its future.

We’re looking forward to an exciting week at CNL and to connecting with even more alumni who are making an impact across Canada’s nuclear landscape.

Fiona Kirby is a recent FEAS Undergraduate Alumni!
Since starting Mechanical Engineering in 2021, Fiona has embraced every opportunity, from working for Engineering Outreach, to leading Women in Engineering and the Ontario Tech Racing Aerodynamics team. Along the way, she gained hands-on experience through roles at ACE, the Canadian Space Agency, and a NASCAR team.

Her internship at the Canadian Space Agency saw her working on lunar rover projects, while her work in NASCAR led to aerodynamic components she designed being installed on Cup Series race cars.

In her final year, Fiona and her groups space focused capstone project earned first place in the capstone competition.
Fiona is returning to Joe Gibbs Racing as a full-time Aerodynamics Engineer, where she'll continue designing, testing, and implementing aerodynamic improvements that help race cars perform at their best.
Fiona has said that she has even surprised her self with how far her passion and dreams have taken her, and she hopes that her story inspires other women in STEM .

This week marked the kickoff of our Student Led CANDU Reactor Physical & Virtual Simulator Project at Ontario Tech University! ⚛️
Students explored nuclear fission, took measurements of real CANDU reactor components, and learned how VR can transform nuclear education.
The project aims to create both a physical and virtual reactor simulator to help students, parents, and STEM enthusiasts better understand how a CANDU reactor works.
A great start to an exciting interdisciplinary project bringing together nuclear technology, engineering design, simulation, and virtual reality. Stay tuned for updates!
