You will rarely see us come on here and mourn the loss of a great person or musician and tell you how much they influenced our lives. All that should be obvious and it's mostly pretty tacky. This one does really hurt though. The Westminster Hotel in Dawson City was nothing short of one of the most unique places on the planet, and today, the three of us grieve with the other precious few human beings who have been able to spend minutes or hours or days in this place. Truly one of the greatest holes in the wall on the entire planet and probably the universe, The Pit will forever be in our hearts and minds. A place where a cross dressing bartender can sit next to a hillbilly gold miner. Where an environmentalist hippy can do shots with a mining company developer. Where criminals can buy a round for an RCMP officer. Truly the Cantina bar of earth in my mind and the best day drinking room anywhere (especially in the summer when it's daytime all the time.) We got invited to play 2 nights at the Pit way back in 2004 and fell in love right away. We knew 8 songs and played for 4 hours each night. It was part of starting our entire travelling career. We stayed in one of the rooms above with crooked floors and doors that wouldn't close. Those who fall under the spell of the north knew and loved this place well, and although we were only visitors, the hotel always felt like home. I imagine that's how it felt to every lucky soul who got to hang out there for any length of time. We will miss her a lot and we feel for our friends up there. I truly feel sorry for the 99% of people on the planet who never got to help keep a shine on the old bar. There will never be another place like her.
