We're Dave Meister and Christina Caldwell, who run a small farm in New Ross, NS. This page is to tell stories and show pictures of our life on the farm.

We now work our professional "day-jobs" mostly from home and work on the farm in the evenings and weekends. We balance professional careers, with work on our family farm. The farm is a 6th generation cattle farm in New Ross, NS and the farm house was built around1845. Some of the things we do on the farm are:

- Host events under our pavilion
- Grow a large vegetable garden to sell produce
- Raise grass-fed angus cattle
- Raise chickens for meat and eggs
- Maple Syrup production
- Grow Blueberries
- Preserve, pickle, ferment and forage
- Harvest, prepare and deliver firewood
- Sell Christmas Tress and hand made wreathes

Our goal is to live a balanced, sustainable lifestyle using traditional farming techniques. At the same time incorporating modern technology like telecommuting, to stay connected.

Although our pizza event was cancelled because of the forecast, the farmstand will still be open this weekend.

We managed to save the dahlias from frost, so tomorrow we will have fresh cut flowers, lots of our apples, squash that we grew, tomatoes, jam and cookie baked by our summer student Andelyn.

It was 2 C and frosty here this morning, with ice on the windshield and sheets that we used to cover things frozen stiff. Time will tell what survived in the gardens, but we're in for another cold night tonight.

There's another frost advisory for tonight. Any day now, a frost could hit and the dahlias could be done for the year unless we can save from a light frost them by watering them at sunrise. As fall arrives, the task of harvesting and deadheading blooms increases so they're quite a bit of work now. But, digging up all of the tubers and putting them into storage for the winter, is a huge undertaking, so we'd really like for them to survive a couple more weeks!

We had a nice plum harvest this year, and Christina made multiple batches of plum jam. It was popular at the farmstand this weekend, and we will have more jars available this weekend.

The farmstand is open today, Sunday September 20 from 9 am to 6 pm. We have fresh flowers, peppers, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, garlic, shallots, herbs, plum jam, gravenstein apples and bunting.

We had a close call with frost in the dahlia patch last night. It got down to 3C here at our house and no frost, but it was down to 2C at the bottom of the hill where the dahlia garden is. The grass beside the dahlias was covered in icy frost. We sprayed the whole dahlia garden with water at sunrise to protect them. We have a few more cold nights this week, but we are hoping to keep them alive and blooming for a while longer.

The farmstand is open this weekend, Saturday and Sunday September 19 and 20 from 9 am to 6 pm. We have lots of stuff this weekend, and would love for you to stop by. With the cool nights, dahlias, tomatoes and peppers are slowing down and we don't know how much longer we will have these.

We have dahlias, Gravenstein apples, shallots, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, shish*to peppers, squash, pumpkins, dried herbs, plum jam, garlic, and bunting.

Anyone else watching the forecast for tomorrow night? We've been watching the weather long enough here to know it's always a few degrees colder overnight here than the forecasted low. If the forecast is for 4C, we could easily have a frost.

A frost could mean the end to our dahlias, peppers and tomatoes and we're harvesting as much as we can. We have lots of these things to stock the farmstand this weekend!
