🐾 What’s Hiding in Some Dog Toys? Common Plastic Chemical Linked to Anxiety in New Animal Study

Researchers presenting at ENDO 2026, one of the world’s leading endocrinology conferences, reported that lab animals exposed early in life to DEHP, a plastic softening chemical commonly used in some PVC products, developed significantly more anxiety- like behavior as adults.

While this study was has not yet been published, it adds to growing concerns about all of the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in the environment. DEHP and related phthalates have been detected in soft vinyl pet products, including toys, bowls, collars, bedding, and other flexible PVC items.

Step 1: choose pet toys made with materials such as natural rubber, organic cotton, h**p, wool, and food grade silicone, to help reduce unnecessary exposure.

Step 2: use GABA to your advantage, if your pup has anxiety. When the researchers targeted GABA pathways (one of the brain’s primary calming systems), the anxiety improved . This is especially relevant because the gut microbiome can influence GABA signaling through the gut brain axis.

This is one reason Dr. Karen Becker includes the GABA-promoting strain LP815ā„¢ in PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICSā„¢. In a placebo controlled study, dogs receiving LP815ā„¢ showed improvements in fear, aggression, noise sensitivity, separation related behaviors, sleep quality, and overall emotional balance.

Fearfulness and nervousness can have a strong genetic component. In this dog’s case, nothing traumatic happened as a puppy. She has been with her owner since day one, and there were no major incidents or bad experiences that created this behavior.

She simply has an extremely large startle response. Anything unusual—a box, a plastic bag, an object that’s out of place—can cause her to freeze, brace herself, and try to escape. The fear is real to her, even when the threat is not.

Unfortunately, because she’s a large and powerful dog, those reactions can create real challenges for her owner as well. If she panics and tries to flee, she can easily pull someone off balance or drag them into an unsafe situation.

Our goal is to create clarity and confidence by making the solution to the problem become the reward.

In this exercise, we’re using a cardboard box. Ordinarily, a box like this would be enough to terrify her. Rather than avoiding it, we present the object and provide gentle leash pressure as guidance. We’re not punishing her. We’re simply preventing the escape response and showing her that nothing bad is happening.

The moment she chooses to move toward the box and investigate, the pressure is released. That release is rewarding. The dog discovers that moving forward and engaging with the environment makes the discomfort disappear.

This is called negative reinforcement, and despite the scary-sounding name, it is not abuse. It is simply the removal of pressure when the desired response occurs.

Over time, exercises like this help fearful dogs build confidence, learn better coping strategies, and navigate the world more successfully.

The result is greater freedom, greater safety, and a better quality of life for both the dog and the owner.

This dog would have bitten me pretty seriously when I first arrived at his house a few weeks ago had he had the chance.

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t like filming dogs in their worst moments. I don’t believe in exposing a dog when they’re struggling just to get views. What I do like showing is how quickly things can change when a dog is finally given clear communication and guidance.

This dog was living in a constant state of overstimulation. His nervous system was fried. Walks had become impossible—he was pulling, dragging, panicking, and completely unable to regulate himself. Like so many dogs in this situation, the solution became to simply stop walking him altogether.

Over the last three weeks, we taught him a new way to respond to pressure. Through negative reinforcement, he learned to yield to leash pressure, stay connected to his handler, and find clarity instead of conflict.

Today, we enjoyed a beautiful walk together.

The relief on his owners’ faces said everything. For the first time in a long time, they felt like they could actually enjoy their dog again. More importantly, their dog looked happier too. Calmer. More confident. More capable.

Sometimes the biggest transformations don’t come from teaching a dog something new—they come from finally giving them a communication system they can understand.

Very proud of these guys’ progress! More to come by our next session. Stay tuned!!
