"The only limits that exist are the ones in your own mind."
Jaco van Gass and Stuart Croxford of Team KT18 were the very first double amputee team in Absa history to successfully tackle the African MTB Race. They completed the 624km and 16 650m of vertical ascent in a time of 48:54:44,6.
We caught up with them after this year's Stage 1: https://www.cape-epic.com/news/1190/heroes-in-the-making/

Descending technical single track at speed is tough for most but when only having one arm it proves a little more challenging. Especially when feathering both front and rear brakes through one hand independently

Rolling out of the start chute at the prologue at The University of Cape Town
A very short day in comparison to what the had in store for us over the 7 days to follow. The course had everything from climbs to some great technical single track. All with amazing views over Cape Town and Table Mountain
(unfortunately we only got to enjoy the views on the route recce thanks to the British weather we seem to have brought with us)

Fuelling the machine ⛽️
Nutrition was definitely one of our biggest concerns when taking on the 8 days of tough racing in the
We’ve both done our far share of endurance events and sometimes even after one day you can experience some pretty horrific side effects to certain sports nutrition products
Clean and natural sports nutrition is definitely a must and having some variation with flavours to prevent your taste buds going on strike
provided us with their wide range of new products giving us huge confidence that we’d be fuelling sufficiently day after day. Definitely try out their pineapple & coconut energy drink 🤤 A firm favourite from us 👍🏻
We could have eaten bars for days (we did for 9 constantly). Natural ingredients and a huge range of flavours meant every day was a different selection
