Markham Fair

Every one of these people has run Homecraft at Markham Fair. 💙

Past Homecraft Presidents, together at the fairgrounds yesterday.

Homecraft is the heart of our exhibit halls. The baking and the preserves, the quilts and the needlework, the flowers, the photography, all the handiwork that people carry in on entry day and the crowds line up to see. Markham Fair has had a Homecraft President every single year since 1957, and every one of them did the same quiet, enormous job: convincing a whole community to make something, enter it, and show it off.

Look at who they were. A seamstress. An organist. A school teacher and farmwife. An x-ray technician. A cake decorator. A dog breeder. A runway model. A nurse, a law clerk, a florist, a librarian. Women, for nearly all of those years, who already had full lives and took this on anyway. Most of them for two years running, some for three.

Thank you, every one of you. The halls are full this weekend because you kept them full first.

The complete list going back to 1957 is on our website: markhamfair.ca/fair/homecraft-past-presidents
