ππΌ What are those orange blobs on her legs?! π
Ten days after the hive split at ARMS, the North Fraser Bee Club returned to check on the colony, and spotted something pretty amazing. One hardworking worker bee came back loaded with bright orange pollen packed onto her back legs. These fuzzy βpocketsβ are called pollen baskets, or corbiculae.
Located on the outer part of a honeybeeβs hind legs, these specialized structures are surrounded by tiny hairs that help bees collect and transport pollen back to the hive π
Why does this matter?
πΌ Pollen is a major food source for the colony
π It provides protein and nutrients for developing bees
π± Bees accidentally transfer pollen between flowers while foraging, helping pollinate plants and support healthy ecosystems
So next time you see a bee covered in pollen, youβre watching a tiny ecosystem worker hard at work π
Nature is full of incredible little details!

πΏπͺ Get your gloves ready, itβs restoration time at Trethewey Channel!
Join ARMS for an afternoon of hands-on stewardship as we work together to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry and restore valuable riparian habitat along the waterway by planting native plants as well. By clearing invasive plants and making room for native species to grow, volunteers will help support healthier streambanks, improved wildlife habitat, and stronger ecosystems for salmon and other species.

ππ¦ We are thrilled to share that more than 225 Painted Lady Butterfly caterpillars have been adopted through this yearβs Adopt-a-Butterfly fundraiser, helping raise over $7,750 in support of the Alouette River Management Society!
This incredible community support allows families to experience the fascinating lifecycle of a butterfly firsthand while directly supporting environmental education, stewardship, and conservation initiatives within the watershed. From tiny caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, the program continues to inspire curiosity, connection with nature, and appreciation for the small but important species that share our ecosystems. We are so grateful to everyone who participated, helped spread the word, and supported this growing fundraiser. Thank you for helping make this yearβs program such a success!
We still have a small number of caterpillars available for adoption ahead of our final pickup date on June 6th. This will be the last pickup opportunity of the season, so if youβve been thinking about participating, now is your chance to join the butterfly journey before the program wraps up for the year!

π Today is Wild Salmon Day!
Today, we celebrate one of British Columbiaβs most iconic and important species, wild salmon. Salmon are more than just fish. They help feed forests, support wildlife, nourish ecosystems, and connect the ocean, river, and land together. Here in the Alouette River watershed, wild salmon play a critical role in the health of our waterways and local environment. From tiny fry in side channels to adults returning home to spawn, every stage of their journey is crucial.
Wild Salmon Day is a reminder of why habitat restoration, clean water, healthy riparian areas, and community stewardship are so important π±

ARMS is incredibly grateful to recognize a generous $5,000 donation from ARMS Director Matt Kennedy in support of conservation, restoration, environmental education, and stewardship efforts within the Alouette watershed.
As we celebrate 33 years of community-led conservation, we are excited to launch a new fundraising goal:
πΏ 100 monthly donors giving $33 a month πΏ
That works out to just $1.10 a day, less than the cost of a morning coffee, but together, this kind of reliable support can have a huge impact.
Monthly giving helps create more stable funding for ARMS, reducing the constant strain of seeking grant funding and allowing more energy to go directly into protecting and restoring local waterways, fish habitat, wildlife, and community programming.
As a registered charity, ARMS can also provide charitable tax receipts for eligible donations.
We hope Mattβs incredible generosity inspires others to join us in supporting the future of the watershed. Whether through monthly giving, a one-time donation, volunteering, or sharing our work, every contribution helps make a difference. π§π
