It's been far too long since I've been in the mental state to bead. One of the things I learned about when learning to bead was the importance of state of mind and spirit and the energy it imparts on the work. What I have been feeling for quite some time now is not energy I want to spread in the world or weave into my art. As much as , I feel that to be true, I've only just been able to pick up the pieces again. So. I made myself a gift... filled with love, intention, and hope for good things ahead.

Today is Red Dress Day, a day devoted to remembering, honouring, and advocating on behalf of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people. Inspired by Jamie Black, a Métis artist from Manitoba who hung hundreds of red dresses in public to represent MMIWG2S+, this day raises awareness about the disproportionate violence that Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people face in Canada.

Five years after the final report on MMIWG, the crisis persists. On Red Dress Day and beyond, let’s stand in solidarity, honour the lives lost, and demand action. Together, we can create a safe future for all Indigenous people.

If you want to learn more about this crisis, visit Safe Passage, our initiative that monitors and provides resources on MMIWG2S+: https://bit.ly/3wp27Xt

Oh, it's been so long since I've been on here, I forgot to post the finished vamp lip piece.

Originally, I was going to do earrings. Then I had the idea to add chain and loved it so much, but it is too heavy for an earring now....Thinking brooch?

Shé:kon (Hello) and Welcome to the new folks who have recently followed my page.

My name is Lorelei Phillips and I am a mixed heritage, (Haudenosaunee (Kanienʼkehá꞉ka)), Indigiqueer artist. I grew up in Miꞌkmaꞌki and am now living on unceded Katzie Territory my partner, 3 kids and our 2 cats!

Growing up in a small, rural town in Nova Scotia not connected to my Indigenous roots had left me with many mixed feelings about being Indigenous and it wasn't really until my early 20's when I started to explore what it all meant. Since then, I have met so many incredible folks and have been on a personal journey of truth and reconciliation.

Following the sudden death of my father, my sister taught me how to make my first pair of earrings in 2020 and from there the obsession with beading began. Since then, I have made countless pairs of earrings and brooches and have developed a love of all things beadwork throughout the process. Not only has this artform brought beauty and new skills into my life, as a result I also stand taller and am proud of my Indigenous roots.

Beading is truly medicine.

Niá:wen (Thank you) for being on this journey with me.
