I love using visual supports like this, because it helps me understand my students even if they’re not speaking yet.

When a child points, looks, or uses a visual to say “more,” that’s communication. That’s intention. That’s thinking. And I want them to feel that I get them.

In our space, we believe in affirming who they are while still supporting growth. We believe in presuming competence.

Not speaking yet doesn’t mean not understanding. It doesn’t mean not thinking. It just means we need to listen differently.

So we make space for gestures, for hand leading, or for visuals like this.

Different ways of doing things, but always the same goal: to be heard, understood, and respected.
