Vision Therapy aims to "train the brain" to help achieve clear comfortable binocular vision.
One area we have been working on recently with my junior/nhl goalies are shoulder checks. Making sure we get our eyes in the correct spot and don’t over turn our head. Effective checks can make a huge difference in making sure goalies stay positionally aware and aware of their depth!

Proper guided sports vision training is a valuable tool for goalies, whether it’s the offseason or in-season. Developing the right visual skills can help you stay dialed in, improve consistency, and perform at your best when it matters most. With technology there are more and more tools out there so filtering through the noise and knowing what to do and why we are doing an activity becomes really critical!
Training the 🧠 and eyes 👀 to converge, track, and process information can help slow the game down and be able to pick things up faster and more efficiently in baseball. When milliseconds matter vision training becomes huge!
With a data base of over 200 goalies of all ages and levels, during an evaluation we can detect any binocular vision inefficiencies along with compare reaction speeds, tracking, processing, awareness and many other visual skills to come up with a training game plan!
One way to take your tracking to the next level is training peripheral awareness and transitioning to tracking down and on top, making sure we staying visually dialed and having high compete. This can all be trained and engrained so by the time the season comes it’s automatic!
From U-10 to the NHL training your visual system can pay huge dividends during the season. Our goal is to have our athletes use their visual systems more efficiently and effectively than their competition by using science backed activities!
Had a few of our athletes try the new react toy challenge trying to catch two at once, working on multi object tracking. Can also do this with a 2 player mode!
A little throwback to some in-season work on tracking. Some takeaways:
- Eyes first and watch the ball all the way in
- just because you catch with your hand doesn’t mean you will forget to catch with your glove. It’s like saying if you go golfing you will forget how to take a slap shot
- doing an unfamiliar task actually promotes neuro plasticity and learning 🧠 👊
As athletes get ready to really take the next level this summer it’s important to think about how to take care of your eyes and make you feel confident and ready to go during the season. Too much screen time can cause visual fatigue and dry eyes, so looking for ways to really train your visual system while avoiding screen fatigue is critical. Goalies track everything — the puck, the play, the movement. Visual focus isn’t just for game time; it matters in training too. Staying locked in during stretches builds body awareness, improves control, and helps connect your eyes with your movement. Focus with intention. 👀🥅
