This is what you should encourage your child to do and here’s why.
The nutrients in your child’s food when well chewed seed the healthy bacteria that prevents harmful pathogens from entering.
The mouth is your child’s first line of defence as saliva contains over 700 species of bacteria.
This bacteria preforms many functions and one function is preventing harmful pathogens from entering your child’s body.
So slow down and encouraging your child to thoroughly chew their food and swish their nutrient dense smoothies.
Believe it or not it was actually my mother that sparked my interest in nutrition.
It was more than 20 years ago when my mother educated me on partially hydrogenated oils and suggested that I NOT buy food items for my family that contained this harmful trans fatty acid.
My mother read her food labels and if it contained "partially hydrogenate oils' then she didn't buy it.
I remember this being a pivoting moment for me because I didn't realize that foods could cause harm.
I immediately followed her lead and can honestly say that partially hydrogenated oils have been banned from my house ever since learning this important information from my momma.
Guess what....my kids grew up knowing that these oils were harmful and now they too refuse to buy foods that contain "partially hydrogenated oils".
As the old saying goes " kids live what they learn."
Partially hydrogenated oils can be found in margarine, vegetable shortening, cookies, crackers, baked goods, fried foods, packaged snacks and even coffee creamers.
Food manufactures use these oils to save money, add texture and stability to foods as well as increase the foods shelf life. A saying that I learned in school was "partially hydrogenated oils are added to increase shelf life but may shorten your life".
There are lots of alternatives to healthier oils. Some food manufacturers are getting better and using options such as avocado, olive, grapeseed, coconut, sesame, flaxseed and peanut.
I encourage you to read your labels and teach your child the same so that they will grow up knowing better options for themselves.

Are probiotic foods a regular part of your child’s diet?
Probiotic foods are considered “transient” which means your child consumes them, they do their specific job and then exit out.
This is why it’s important to include probiotic foods on a regular basis for your child.
Here’s a simple and easy way to include probiotics so that your child is starting their day in a gut healthy way.
Recipe is as follows
1/2 cup organic rolled oats
2 Tbsp chia seed
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
Mix dry ingredients together.
Stir in
1 cup almond milk
1/2 to 1 tsp local honey (adjust sweetness according to child)
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup kefir
Stir until we’ll combined and top with frozen berries or fresh fruit.
This is a single adult serving and if it’s too much for your child then store leftovers in the fridge for the next day.
Time saver tip: make a few days worth in mason jars to streamline your morning routine.
Is your child getting enough gut healthy fibre and probiotics in their diet?
