Dreaming of Spring
It snowed this morning. You know what that means? It's time to start dreaming of spring. I hibernate like a bear when it gets cold enough outside to freeze my eyeballs, so for now all I can do is wait for the warmer temperatures to start again. I can't wait to see all of the redbud trees in bloom!

Little Features Bring Big Impact
When designing a contemporary home, one feature that consistently delivers a dramatic impact is a glass garage door. Its sleek, airy presence acts as both a functional element and a statement piece, adding sophistication, lightness, and a distinctly modern edge that instantly enhances the façade.

Choosing between light and bright exterior colours or dark and moody tones sets the entire mood of a home’s architecture. Light and bright palettes, such as soft whites, warm taupes, or pale greys, tend to feel airy and welcoming. In contrast, dark and moody colours like charcoal, navy, or deep bronze create a sense of depth and drama. The decision often comes down to how the colours interact with the home’s setting, textures, and natural light, as well as the homeowner's preferences.

The right combination of colours doesn’t just complement the architecture—it sets the tone for how the home is experienced from the street. For example, here is the same home in two different colour schemes: The top image has more of a transitional colour scheme, with greys and whites, giving a fresh, clean feel. The bottom image is based more in earthy tones, like greens, browns, and taupes, giving a cozy, warm feel. Which one do you prefer?

The shape and textures of a home’s exterior play a key role in creating visual interest that evolves from day to night. During the day, varied rooflines and layered materials catch natural light differently, highlighting shadows and depth across the façade. Rough textures like stone or brick contrast beautifully with smooth stucco surfaces, giving the home a dynamic, tactile presence. As daylight fades, strategically placed lighting transforms these same features, accenting architectural lines, grazing textured walls, and casting a warm glow that reveals new patterns and dimensions....

Can you spot the difference between these two elevations? It's small but it makes a difference. Hint: hone in on the garage doors. If you noticed the window change in the garage doors, you have a good eye! The first version has grilles running both directions and a slight arch top over the windows. Version two simplifies those windows to only have grilles running up-and-down, and squares off the window shape as well. These changes helps declutter the look of the doors and allows the arches used elsewhere on the façade to stand out.

Exterior lighting is like jewellery for a home. The right lighting draws attention to architectural features, creates depth, and adds a touch of elegance after dark. It can be subtle, like a soft glow outlining a walkway, or bold, like statement sconces flanking a doorway. In the same way that jewellery balances beauty and function, exterior lighting is both practical and ornamental, guiding guests safely while giving the home a polished, inviting presence.

It’s often the subtle details in a home’s exterior that make it truly unforgettable. Elements like exposed rafter tails or extra-thick fascia boards add depth and craftsmanship, giving it character and presence while hinting at the care and thought that went into its design. By layering in these kinds of details, a house doesn’t just blend into the streetscape, it stands out as memorable, inviting, and enduring.
