Ohpaho Secondary School Principal Dan Lake has been honoured by the Alberta Teachers' Association.
Lake was named as a recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award, which was handed out at a provincial event earlier this month. The annual award is given to exceptional principals, vice-principals, and assistant principals who excel in providing high-quality learning opportunities and demonstrate excellence in the Alberta Leadership Quality Standard.
Dan Lake was recognized for his unwavering commitment to students, staff, and the Ohpaho school community. Lake is the school's first-ever principal, and is credited as having played a critical role in building a school culture where students feel supported and staff feel valued. The nomination was submitted by OSS teacher Justin Gabinet, who has worked with Lake for the past two years.
"I am honoured to receive this award," said Lake. "The work required to open a new school cannot be attributed to any one person. I am grateful to be part of the Ohpaho team and for the opportunity to serve alongside such dedicated people. This recognition is a reflection of their commitment and has been an incredible culmination of my career with Black Gold School Division."

Several local municipalities continue to grapple with wastewater capacity issues due to recent heavy rainfall.
These issues were first observed over the weekend in Beaumont, Calmar, and Thorsby. In these municipalities, residents have been asked to reduce all non-essential water use in order to limit pressure on the wastewater system and lower the risk of additional sewer backups and localized flooding.
"City crews are actively monitoring the city's wastewater system and the community's safety," reads a statement from the City of Beaumont. "Residents are advised to avoid driving or walking in areas where manhole covers have become dislodged or there is evidence of flooding. During heavy rain, manhole covers can become dislodged due to increased water and air pressure within the sewer and stormwater system."
They ask residents to hold off on laundry and dishwashing, take short showers and limit baths, avoid flushing toilets, refrain from running the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, and to eliminate any other non-essential water use.
In addition, the significant rainfall over the past 48 hours has caused widespread flooding across Leduc County, resulting in numerous road closures and hazardous driving conditions. As of today, closures are in effect along sections of Township Roads 494, 474, and 482 between Range Roads 15 and 20. Road closures are also impacting portions of Range Roads 22, 23, 254, and 271 between Township Roads 481 and 482.
