If you want your group shots to look dynamic, editorial and full of energy, you need to think in shapes. The most powerful shape you can use is a triangle.

Triangles instantly add structure to chaos. They guide the viewer’s eye, create balance and stop the photo from feeling stiff. Every great group shot has some kind of triangle in it, whether you notice it or not.

Here is how to build them.

• Vary the heights. Put someone slightly higher, someone lower and someone in the middle. This creates the triangle base and peak.

• Bring people forward or back. A small step in or out adds depth that a straight line will never give you.

• Create natural connections. Hands, shoulders and subtle leans form invisible lines that complete the triangular shape without looking forced.

• Build micro triangles inside the larger group. Think of smaller clusters within the scene. This adds layers and stops the group from feeling like one big block.

• Use the environment. Stairs, sofas, rails and walls help you anchor your triangles and give the composition a sense of place and intention.

The moment you stop lining people up and start shaping them, the image comes alive. You turn a group of people into a composition. You create a frame that feels designed rather than accidental.
