Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.

Observed during National Indigenous History Month, this day is an opportunity to listen, learn, and reflect while honouring the strength, resilience, and enduring presence of Indigenous Peoples. It is also a time to recognize the deep connections Indigenous communities have to the land, to one another, and to generations of knowledge, teachings, and traditions that continue to enrich our country.

At Waterloo Regional Health Network - WRHN, we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Indigenous Peoples and communities as we continue our journey toward reconciliation, cultural safety, and more inclusive care.

Today, and every day, we honour Indigenous voices, celebrate Indigenous cultures, and recognize the lasting contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. We are committed to listening, learning, and walking together toward a future built on respect, understanding, and meaningful reconciliation.

Juneteenth, observed on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their emancipation — but more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While rooted in U.S. history, Juneteenth carries deep meaning for Canadians as well.

Canada’s own story includes over two centuries of slavery under French and British rule, followed by generations of anti‑Black racism that shaped communities from Nova Scotia to Ontario. Even as Canada became a destination for freedom seekers via the Underground Railroad, Black Canadians continue to face segregation, limited opportunities, and erasure of their histories.

Today, Juneteenth offers us an opportunity to reflect on this shared legacy across North America. It invites us to honour the resilience of Black communities, acknowledge the realities of systemic racism, and recommit to building a more equitable future. As awareness grows, alongside Canada’s own Emancipation Day on August 1, Juneteenth serves as a reminder that the pursuit of true freedom and justice is a collective, ongoing effort.

Today also marks Philippine Independence Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many ways Filipino individuals, families, and communities enrich our region, strengthen our healthcare system, and contribute to the communities we call home.

Today, Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) announced that President and CEO Ron Gagnon will retire on March 31, 2027. Ron has been a steady and visionary leader through one of the most transformative periods in Waterloo Region’s healthcare history.
 
From guiding the regional COVID‑19 response to advancing innovation, quality, and service delivery, Ron’s leadership has helped shape a stronger future for care. His work on the planning for a new hospital and the creation of WRHN marks a historic milestone for our region.
 
Board Chair Janet Davidson shared the Board’s deep appreciation for Ron’s commitment to putting people first. A thoughtful recruitment process will begin soon to ensure a smooth transition.
 
“It has been a privilege to serve alongside the people of WRHN and our many partners across Waterloo Region,” says Ron. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together and confident in the path ahead. The work underway today is creating a stronger future for healthcare in this community, and I know WRHN will continue to move forward with purpose and compassion.”
