So… I’m about to graduate?!?!

After 4 years of bonding over all-nighters pulled at school, program crashes, and caffeine jitters, I’m nearing the end of my journey in the Bachelor of Design program. To celebrate the milestone, I’ve organized a collaborative T-shirt project to help fund our upcoming grad show.

Each illustration on the shirt was created by a graduating student from Conestoga’s 2025 BDes class, and the final layout was composed by my classmate, Alyssa Uy. The shirts are screen printed locally in Kitchener by Civilian Screen Printing.

All proceeds go directly toward our grad show, with any extra funds donated to the local hospice, an organization close to my heart that has helped me and my family through the toughest time.

You can purchase a shirt here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4340189145/vanta-graphic-tee-unisex-t-shirt-grad?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1&crt=1&logging_key=ffc079a9a15ad5c244ba929405bc4f00e7e74a59%3A4340189145

If you're interested in attending the grad show, please feel free to send me a message. We’d love to have you there!

We’re also on the lookout for sponsors to help bring the show to life, so if you or your company would like to support a group of emerging designers, I’d love to connect.

Thanks for reading, and for supporting creativity, community, and design!

Anyone in Ontario who’s recently had the displeasure of visiting the hospital likely agrees that our healthcare system is strained. Between staffing shortages, ER closures, and 1 in 5 Canadians without a primary physician, it’s clear the system needs support.

After a few too many (non-serious!) hospital visits earlier this year, I experience just how disjointed and overwhelming the system can be. That inspired me to design Mediscio, a conceptual platform that equips Ontarians with accessible preventative healthcare tools, helping reduce future strain.

Informed by OMA’s Prescription for Ontario report, Mediscio consolidates patient health info, encourages preventative behaviours, and digitally connects individuals with care providers, all within an accessible visual system. The anatomy illustrations are sources from old textbooks and encyclopedias, a direction sparked by inspirational DesignThinkers talk (my favourite talk at the conference!)

After several freelance projects, 2 co-op terms, and a lot of learning in and out of school, I’ve crafted a portfolio that feels more me.

It’s built with intention and reflects my approach to design as a culmination of art and strategy.

As this co-op semester wraps up, I’m reflecting on my experience in the Gig Lab, Conestoga Entrepreneurship Collective’s freelance business incubator.

Prior to my acceptance in the Gig Lab, the thought of starting my own business was always at the back of my mind -- it just felt too intimidating. While contemplating where to apply for my first co-op semester, I looked into the Gig Lab. I knew it was what I needed to take my freelancing game from timid and meager to confident and high-achieving.

For 4 months, the program provided group coaching, one-on-one coaching, introduced me to a network of like-minded freelancers, and provided a multitude of resources. I have expanded my network, furthered my knowledge in areas that are imperative to my success as a freelancer, and increased my confidence. I have learned about business structures, effective approaches for communicating with potential clients, and further developed a brand for myself.

While having the opportunity to focus solely on developing my business, I've been able to put the tools in practice, working with real clients. This co-op experience has been valuable and introduced me to what is involved if I want to pursue freelancing.

While in the Gig Lab, I have made edits to my portfolio: www.vienneseto.com, and launched my Conestoga Gigs Profile: https://www.conestogagigs.ca/vienne-seto-design-studio/. Please check them out!

Not too long ago, I felt this immense pressure to create something novel and never-before-seen, to the point where I stopped even looking at inspiration for fear that my end result would be too similar. I didn’t want my stuff to look like anything else; no previous or current art movement, I didn’t want to “keep up with the trends”, and I definitely did not want anyone to look at my art and say “this reminds me of so-and-so’s stuff”.

I stopped even applying rules, which, in hindsight is pretty cocky — did I think I was above them or something? Well, the end result was pretty much what you’d expect; I made some of the ugliest designs ever.

We were assigned an exercise in school where we had to create something quick, inspired by a previous art movement (featured pic), and it helped me slowly creep out of that mindset. I’d like to think I’ve grown as a designer since then!

Brand photography from a while ago. I wanted the photography to align with the brand’s new identity; warm, authentic, and expressive. Thanks to Vanessa, Julia, and Noah’s modelling, I think this really came through.
