The Canadian Mental Health Association has put together a great resource to help caretakers understand and cope with any changes you see in your child's mental health. The past year and a half have been very challenging, but it is possible to still have good mental health!

For all the families with students attending Waterloo Region public schools, the school board has released a PDF of the back to school plan for September 2020. You can find the documents here: https://www.wrdsb.ca/wp-content/uploads/GUIDE-FOR-FAMILIES.pdf
It's not a perfect plan and I understand why many families are feeling uneasy about sending their kids back to school. So, check out what the board is doing (and ignore whatever rumours are circulating in your neighbourhood) and make the choice that is right for you and your family!

Some parents are ditching their child's homeschool lessons, and experts say that's OK 05/07/2020

The Covid-19 pandemic has cast parents in a role they weren't expecting - teacher. In a time of already heightened stress, trying to coax your child to complete assignments and homework can add more stress to an already tense home-life. If sitting in front of a computer for a few hours a day, trying to learn online is not accessible for you child, then don't force them to do it. If you are concerned they might fall behind, reach out to their teacher (or a tutor, like me!) to how else you can help your child learn during this unprecedented time.

Some parents are ditching their child's homeschool lessons, and experts say that's OK Some parents have decided to replace their child’s school assignments with other activities, such as baking, crafts and games -- a solution early childhood education experts say is perfectly fine.

Math Resource 03/31/2020

For those of you looking for a resource to help your kids learn "real" math, I recommend the "Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life". It is a grade 11 level course, but don't be intimidated, the only math skills you need are adding/subtracting, multiplying/dividing and working with percentages (for things like calculating tax). This is a great way to talk about what it takes to run a household, how banking and bank accounts work, and what earning a paycheque means.
