D2L Lumi usage increased 800% in 2025.
That growth reflects something bigger happening across education and workplace learning. Organizations want tools that help instructors save time, support learners more effectively, and create more personalized experiences at scale.
What stands out most is how quickly adoption is accelerating. The conversation has shifted from experimenting with new technology to making it part of everyday learning.
The future of learning is not about replacing educators. It is about helping them focus more of their time and energy where it matters most.

In this episode of Teach & Learn, Dr. Emma Zone sits down with, vice president and associate provost of engagement and retention at, to explore what student success requires in today’s higher education landscape.
Drawing on learning science, institutional research and lived experience, Mitch introduces the idea of “rigor and relief” — the belief that challenge alone is not enough to produce meaningful learning. Students grow through productive struggle, but only when that struggle is balanced with the right academic, social and human support.
The conversation explores:
🔹 Why one-on-one human interactions remain one of the strongest drivers of student retention
🔹 How faculty feedback can serve as both rigor and relief
🔹 What educators should understand about ethical AI use and digital hygiene
🔹 Why teaching students how to recover and rebuild after challenge may be one of higher education’s most important responsibilities
Mitch also reflects on his own experience returning to school in the age of generative AI, offering a candid perspective on learning, resilience and the future of education.
A thoughtful conversation on what it truly means to support students today.

Accessibility isn’t just about access to learning — it’s about making sure every learner feels supported, empowered, and able to succeed. 🌍
This Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re recognizing institutions like Robertson College that are building more inclusive learning experiences through thoughtful support systems and flexible learning design.
By combining accessible tools, personalized accommodations, and learner-first approaches in D2L Brightspace, Robertson College is helping students engage with their education in ways that work best for them.
And the impact speaks for itself. Hear directly from a Robertson College student about their experience with the program.
Thank you, Robertson College, for demonstrating how accessibility can create stronger, more equitable learning experiences for everyone. 💚

Over the past two days, D2L Connection: Melbourne brought together some of the brightest minds in education to explore one big question: how do we shape what’s next for learning in the age of AI?
Across 2 inspiring keynotes, 6 customer stories, 15+ speakers, and countless candid conversations, one thing became clear — the future of learning is already being built.
A few moments that stood out:
🎓 Phillip Dawson (Deakin University) challenged us to rethink assessment design entirely. If AI can now pass high-stakes exams, what does integrity really mean — and what does assessment need to become?
🏛️ Victoria University shared how they redesigned the learner experience across 1,245+ units and 50,000+ students — while preserving the work learning designers had already built. Transformation at true institutional scale.
📊 CPA Australia unpacked what it takes to design for capability, not just completion — from content structure to templates and build standards that drive consistency and impact.
🦷 ADA NSW demonstrated how a connected learning ecosystem can transform member education into a strategic value driver.
🌿 Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu shared how co-design with D2L helped create a nationally scaled onboarding experience that honours learner identity and sets ākonga up for success from day one.
💡 And Jonathan Holtby reminded us that AI isn’t just changing what we can teach — it’s redefining what learners are capable of.
This is what Always Learning: Shape What’s Next looks like in practice.
Thank you to every customer, speaker, partner, and attendee who made D2L Connection: Melbourne such a meaningful event. We’re excited to keep the conversation going!

As AI reshapes the workplace, many organizations are rethinking how work gets done — including how they hire and develop talent.
According to recent research highlighted in HRD Canada, 30% of HR leaders say they’re hiring fewer entry-level employees and leaning more on mid-level talent + AI for work traditionally done by junior staff.
While AI can unlock efficiency and productivity, it also raises an important question: how do we continue building the next generation of talent?
At D2L, we believe learning, mentorship, and upskilling will play a critical role in helping people grow alongside technology. Human skills like communication, creativity, adaptability, and critical thinking remain essential in an AI-driven world.

What a week in Singapore.
Last week, D2L brought together some of the brightest minds in education and learning for two incredible events — and we’re still thinking about the conversations that came out of them.
D2L Executive Connection (14 May) kicked things off at The Masons Table, where senior leaders from higher education, corporate L&D and professional associations came together for a candid discussion on how AI can move us from overload to meaningful impact. Hearing from both executive leaders and student panellists in the same room was a strong reminder that the future of learning needs every voice at the table.
D2L Connection: Singapore (15 May) followed with more than 100 educators, institutional leaders and learning professionals gathering at Hilton Singapore Orchard for a full day of keynotes, customer stories and conversations about what’s next for learning.
Highlights included:
- Customer sessions from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Management University sharing practical lessons from AI in action
- A keynote from Jonathan Holtby on how AI is reshaping what learners are capable of
- A fireside chat with D2L CEO John Baker and SVP Stewart Watts on the future of learning across APAC
Thank you to every speaker, attendee and partner who helped make these two days so memorable. The theme was Always Learning: Shape What’s Next — and this community is already doing exactly that.
Until next time, Singapore.
