"While all of us dread being blamed, we all would wish to be more responsibleβthat is, to have the ability to respond with awareness to the circumstances of our lives rather than just reacting. We want to be the authoritative person in our own lives: in charge, able to make the authentic decisions that affect us. There is no true responsibility without awareness. One of the weaknesses of the Western medical approach is that we have made the physician the only authority, with the patient too often a mere recipient of the treatment or cure. People are deprived of the opportunity to become truly responsible. None of us are to be blamed if we succumb to illness and death. Any one of us might succumb at any time, but the more we can learn about ourselves, the less prone we are to become passive victims." Gabor MatΓ©, When the Body Says No
As a chiropractor, pain and physical dysfunction tend to be the focus of my care, but pain very rarely has only a physical cause. The importance of addressing underlying beliefs and coping strategies has become extremely clear to me in addressing chronic pain.
I am so blessed to work with a talented psychotherapy team at CARESPACE Health+Wellness and very excited to be returning to practice in less than 1 week! I can't wait to continue helping individuals feel empowered to get to the root cause of their pain and take responsibility for feeling well.

πΆI spent this weekend with getting my Pediatric Intraoral Palate Specific (PIPS) Technique certification so I can better help babies with feeding difficulties and other oral dysfunction!
π
Tongue tie (also known as anklyloglossia) is estimated to affect approximately 5-10% of all newborns and can have a significant impact on breastfeeding, speech, jaw and overall body tension. While tongue tie releases (cutting the tissue under the tongue) can help, pre- and rehabilitation are crucial and often overlooked components of caring for babies with this condition.
Do you know someone whose baby has been diagnosed with tongue tie or who is struggling with breastfeeding? Tag them in the comments below!

πͺ Did you know that chiropractic care can reduce the risk of falling in older adults?
π§ π£π£ Chiropractic adjustments can strengthen the channel of communication between your brain and body, allowing you to have a better sense of where your body is in space. This allows you to recover more quickly from unexpected tripping hazards like uneven ground, electrical cords, or pets running under our feet! πΆπ±π°
πππ Falls are the the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and injury deaths among older adults. Reduce your risk by maximizing your health!

Did you sprain your ankle months or years ago but still experience frequent ankle rolls? π€ Do you avoid walking or running on uneven surfaces because you're afraid to sprain it again? πββοΈ
You might be suffering from CHRONIC ANKLE INSTABILITY. π¦΅
When your ankle is sprained, the tiny sensors in the joint and surrounding muscles and tendons that tell your brain where it is in space (called proprioceptors) get stretched. Once they are stretched, they become an unreliable source of information for your brain. π§
Poor information about how your body is moving through space makes your movements less coordinated, leading you to be more prone to ankle sprains in the future. π€
π‘ Here are some easy exercises that can improve ankle stability and proprioception:
1οΈβ£ Warm up: Move your ankle in a full circle, first clockwise then counter-clockwise, focusing on bringing the ankle through as large of a range as possible.
2οΈβ£ Balance: Stand with your injured leg on an unstable surface (wobble board, pillow). Practice lifting your uninjured leg to balance on the injured one. Hold for 10 seconds.
3οΈβ£ Ankle strength: Wrap a light resistance band (red or green), around your foot, holding both ends in your hands. Move your foot out into eversion, where the sole of your foot is facing out to the side. Hold this everted position for 5 seconds, then relax.
4οΈβ£ Foot strength:
Keeping the other four toes firmly on the ground, lift your big toe as high as you can and hold it for 5 seconds. Next, keeping your big toe firmly planted on the ground, lift your other four toes as high as you can for 5 seconds.
Repeat all exercises five times on each side, twice a day.

What was my first day of my chiropractic clinical internship like?
Since I was 10 years old, I've dreamed of making a career out of helping people achieve better health. Today, that dream became a reality. π
Things I learned in my first day of treating patients:
βοΈ Imposter syndrome is VERY real. π
βοΈ Patient education is THE most important tool in my toolbox - an educated patient is an empowered patient. π‘
βοΈ Ergonomics is important for chiropractors too - the back pain after a long shift without remembering to adjust my chiropractic table's height was a good reminder. π¬
βοΈ The satisfaction that comes from being able to help people feel and function better with just my hands and words is absolutely incredible.
I am officially accepting new patients at CMCC's Chiropractic Clinic (located at Leslie & Steeles in North York):
β° Mondays 7am-1pm
β° Wednesdays 7am-1pm
β° Fridays 7am-12pm
Send me a message if you'd like to learn more!

Did you know that up to 80% of healthcare information is forgotten immediately and of the information retained, 50% is recalled incorrectly? (1) π£
π©ββοΈ As a healthcare provider, one of my most important jobs is to make sure that you understand the what, why, and how of the condition you've come in with and the approach we will take to get you feeling better.
π€ Chiropractic care is a partnership - in order to be successful we both need to be clear on the goals we're working towards and the why behind them.
π€·ββοΈ After 8 years of post-secondary education, it can be easy for me to accidentally slip into using medical jargon which often means nothing to you and leaves you feeling confused, frustrated, and lacking confidence. π³
π Courses like emphasize that having you repeat back in your own words the important information I have given you can help me to identify any gaps in my explanation. π£
Have you ever had the experience of leaving a doctor's office feeling more confused than when you walked in? Tell me about it in the comments! πππ
