Over the past week high school students in Grades 10 and 11 from across Canada came to Thompson Rivers University to experience the Shad Program. Students learned from engineering faculty, worked with robotics, and got an introduction to coding.
Dr. Derek Lane-Smith founded the Shad program in 1981 in Aurora, Ontario to give students an enriching experience focused on science, technology, engineering and math. Over the last 40 years the program has continuously grown and is now offered at two dozen universities across the nation.

Today we feature one of our most outstanding alumni, Lorelei Guidos!
Lorelei was our first-ever female graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering and an exceptional student. She co-founded the TRUSU Engineering Club and won co-op student of the year in 2020, the Ken Lepin Prize of Excellence, the TRU Medal in Engineering and was valedictorian for the Faculty of Science.
Guidos completed her co-op work term with technology company Raptor Integration Inc. in her hometown of Salmon Arm, B.C. By using innovative scanning, optimization, and a variety of 3D sensor technologies, Raptor implements automation in sawmills and the wood processing industry.
The technology Raptor installs helps sawmills determine the highest grade and value of wood, resulting in more efficient operations, better yields, and more profitable operations.
Following her co-op work experience, Lorelei gained full-time employment with Raptor and has applied the knowledge she gained in her engineering degree to create innovative technology that is utilized across North America.
