A man and 15-year-old boy have been arrested after they allegedly stole a vehicle that was listed for sale online, relisted the car and took the money from a buyer, Toronto police say.

In a news release issued Thursday, police said on Aug. 9 the man and the boy responded to a listing on Facebook Marketplace about a Toyota Camry that was for sale.

When the suspect met the seller, police said, they stole the vehicle.

Two days later, police said, the suspects posted an ad on Facebook Marketplace to sell the stolen vehicle.

Police said a buyer met with the man, the boy, and an unidentified individual to purchase the car. After paying $5,500 for the vehicle, the man, youth and the unidentified individual fled with the Toyota.

Following an investigation, Toronto resident Sadid Sultan Ahmed, 20, was arrested and charged with a number of offences, including theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and theft exceeding $5,000.

The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing the same charges.

A neurosurgeon who performed life-saving brain surgery on a 10-year-old patient a decade ago said it’s surreal to work alongside her in his lab this summer.

"I had to keep pinching myself to say – is this the child I had operated on 10 years ago?" Dr. James Rutka, a neurosurgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children he said.

His former patient and current research student Jessica Rosenbloom arrived in the emergency room of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children almost 10 years ago, and by chance, Rutka was on a call.

“He took my case on from that point on,” Rosenbloom said, only recently transitioning out of his hands and graduating from SickKids.

Over time, Rosenbloom’s questions only mounted and she started chasing answers, pursuing nursing at the University of Ottawa and taking on a summer position in Rutka’s lab studying Glioblastoma, a common and aggressive brain tumour. Ultimately, she aims to research new medical treatments for pediatric patients like herself.

I’m still the kid with the questions and I still want to answer them. I need to answer them. I won't settle until I do and I want to spend the rest of my career answering questions,” she said.

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 15, TTC riders can use credit or debit cards to pay fares, including cards on a smartphone or smartwatch, transit officials say.

Stan Cho, the province's associate minister of transportation, was joined at Leslie Station in Toronto by Phil Verster, president and CEO of Metrolinx, Mayor Olivia Chow, and TTC CEO Rick Leary for the announcement.

"These are more convenient options, not [only] for those who take transit on a regular basis, but visitors to this world-class city that we're privileged to live in," Cho said.

"I agree that we can do better and today we take a step forward to do exactly that."

The launch of credit and debit payment on the TTC follows the introduction of more payment options across many local transit systems in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the province said. In addition to the TTC, riders can also use credit or debit to pay fares on GO Transit including the UP Express, Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, MiWay in Mississauga, Oakville Transit and York Region Transit.

Canadian drivers are feeling pain at the pumps yet again, as gas prices are expected to climb this week, and by the fall, they’re expected to reach close to $2 a litre.

It’s yet another setback, with many Canadians already feeling the financial pinch as the cost of living rises. After a four-cent drop over the recent long weekend, gas prices are expected to go back up, with a climb of four cents by Thursday.

It’s the long-term surge creating panic at the gas pumps. By September, prices could be 20 cents higher than they are currently.

the weak Canadian dollar is adding about 28 cents a litre to the price of fuel. The federal government’s carbon tax also adds 14 cents to every litre.
