Today, the official news was announced: this season of Hometown Takeover will be filmed in Port Alberni.
While Hope was not selected this time, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you.
Over the past several months, countless people in our community came together to help make this application possible.
From those who spent hours helping build the submission, to local residents, business owners, organizations, and community members who shared their stories and participated in interviews - every single contribution mattered.
We even filled Memorial Park with enthusiastic supporters proudly shouting, “Hometown Takeover, come to Hope!” The passion, pride, and love for our community on display throughout this process was truly incredible.
A few months ago, we had a heartfelt conversation with the production team and were assured that there was nothing more we could have done. In the end, another community simply had a story that was the right fit for this season.
While we are naturally disappointed, we are also incredibly proud.
Proud of what we accomplished together.
Proud of the stories we shared.
Proud of the community we call home.
Most importantly, we would never have even had the opportunity to apply without all of you. This application was not built by one organization, it was built by an entire community that believes in Hope and is willing to show up for it.
Congratulations to Port Alberni! We are excited to watch your journey unfold and can't wait to cheer you on this season.
And if another opportunity comes around? We'll be ready.
Because Hope doesn't give up.
Thank you, everyone. 💚

🎨 ART HISTORY TALK & SUNDAY SOCIAL 🍻
Join us for the second presentation in an exciting series of art history events with Ukrainian-born art historian and critic Oleh Oleniev.
In this lively and engaging presentation, Oleh will explore the painting techniques and artistic production of renowned Ukrainian artist Mykola Bilous (1956–2023). Known for his avant-garde approach to colour, Bilous expanded upon Bauhaus theories of complementary colour relationships to develop his revolutionary method of colour harmonization called “inversion.”
A graduate of the Crimean College of Painting and the Kharkiv Institute of Art and Industry, Bilous became widely recognized as a post-media artist whose theatrical treatment of colour transformed graphic, tightly cropped, photo-inspired imagery into dynamic works of art. Through primary tones, complementary contrasts, and striking reversals of light and shadow, Bilous created a visual language unlike any other.
Oleh’s presentations approach art history as a living conversation rather than a static archive, bringing together multiple perspectives, cultural movements, and contemporary relevance through an engaging lecture-performance format.

Join us for the first presentation in a new series of Art History events with Oleh Oleniev, as we explore one of the most remarkable visual narratives from the medieval world: the Bayeux Tapestry.
This session takes a closer look at the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, examining the tapestry through multiple perspectives and considering its enduring role as a powerful piece of propaganda. Far more than a historical artifact, the Bayeux Tapestry offers a fascinating lens through which to discuss storytelling, power, and perception, questions that remain strikingly relevant to contemporary audiences.
Measuring nearly 70 metres in length and created in wool embroidery on canvas, this monumental work opens the door to a wider conversation about history, geography, and the far-reaching consequences of the Norman Conquest across Europe.
Preregistration is required via the link below.
