Last week, colleagues from the Mohawk College Centre for Indigenous Relations, Knowledge, and Learning (CIRKL), the Sustainability Office, Facilities, and a dedicated group of student volunteers gathered at the Fennell Campus for a morning rooted in environmental stewardship and community connection.

Students, staff and volunteers worked together to plant seven sugar maple trees—a number intentionally chosen to honour the Seven Grandfather Teachings in Anishinaabe culture, representing love, truth, wisdom, humility, respect, courage, and honesty.

Native to the region, sugar maples are treasured for their brilliant autumn colours, maple syrup production, and vital role in supporting the local ecosystem, while also holding deep cultural significance for Indigenous communities. Through this collaboration with CIRKL, the newly planted trees will contribute to future land-based learning opportunities on campus.
