I talk a lot about how we need to feel safe - especially when there's something going on that we're feeling stressed about.

And safety isn't in your head - it's in your body. A physiological need.

You can be the most competent, skilled and intelligent person on the planet and still feel stress. There's nothing wrong with it - it's actually a good thing, a sign your nervous system is doing what it's supposed to do.

One of my teachers used to say, "letting go isn't an action; it's a result - of feeling safe, supported, and loved."

Over the years, I've learned that my safety needs to come from within. If I don't feel safe within myself, I can't relax fully into the safety and support of the people in my life.

Safety within myself means loving all the parts and versions of myself - the one who makes good decisions, and the one who screws up and says or does the wrong thing; the one who stays focused and is productive, and the one who wastes time and binge watches TV.

That feels like a big ask, doesn't it?

Learning to love all the parts of ourselves starts with learning to look at those parts, noticing how it feels to acknowledge them, and doing the work of growing our capacity to feel the discomfort.

When you can welcome those uncomfortable feelings and emotions, instead of pushing them away, you can become more curious about what else is going on.

And with curiosity, you can start to release judgment, see beyond good or bad, right or wrong.

I don't think there's much room for love when judgment is present.

There's no magic wand for creating safety with yourself. It comes from working with your body, with your nervous system.

Which is where I love to play.

I help stressed women who overthink, overdo and are at their limit learn to finally relax in their nervous systems, so they can feel calm, in control and at peace.

"I just have to let it go"
"Why is it so hard for me to let this go?"

Do you hear yourself?
(I know I do!)

What if letting go isn't an action, but a result?

I think we all have control issues, and they show up differently in each of us.

How does your need for control show up in your life?

Now, before you start judging yourself, I want to remind you that you didn't just wake up one day and decide to have control issues.

You learned them from someone.

What behaviours were modelled to you by your parents, or the people you spent the most time with when you were a child?
How did they react to stress?
What behaviours did they inherit from their parents?

Does that help you judge yourself a bit less? Maybe have a bit more compassion for yourself?

I don't think I know anyone (especially myself) who doesn't have control issues.

It makes sense that we find certainty in an uncertain world by reaching for control.
For your nervous system, the certainty of control = safety.

How is your value tied to your productivity?

It's an issue I struggle with, too - read more about productivity, self-worth and the illusion of control in my latest blog post.

Stress doesn't mean you're broken.

When we stress our nervous systems with the demands of work, relationships and 21st century life, it's completely normal for the stress response to show up in our bodies, minds and emotions.

(And when we decide there's something wrong with us for feeling stress, we create a whole new level of stress.)

Life offers enough challenges - would you rather fight your nervous system or make friends with it?

I'm all about helping stressed people learn how to finally relax in their nervous systems - by making friends, listening, being supportive... (all the things good friends do)
