McMaster SynBio’s high school internship program is back!
Do you want to earn volunteer hours AND a reference letter by the end of summer?
Are you a high school student who is interested in exploring the world of synthetic biology? Then you’re in luck because McMaster SynBio has a summer internship program just for you! From July to August, you’ll be a part of our wet lab and outreach initiatives and be mentored on the principles of synthetic biology.
This means gaining valuable skills such as:
📚Reviewing scientific literature
🗣Preparing scientific presentations
🔬Analyzing experimental data
✏️Planning collaborative events.
And being exposed to the university club setting!

🟦 McMaster Synthetic Biology Research Team (known as McMaster SynBio) is a student-led, faculty-supervised research team that aims at gathering passionate undergraduate students to participate in synthetic biology wet lab, dry lab, and public outreach initiatives.
🟦 Our team consists of students who work together in a supportive team environment to complete a project that will be presented at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. We are hiring for the following 2 positions:
🟦Wet Lab Lead
- For the more experienced young scientist with at least 8-12 months of independent research experience;
- Experienced with basic biochemical techniques; full time availability from May to August 2022);
- Leading and supervising wet lab-related work for our self-directed research projects;
- Mentoring team members in scientific exploration;
- Perform literature review;
- Participate in project development;
- Design and conduct wet-lab research experiments;
- Perform data analysis and participate in the final project write-up.

The Outreach Subteam is responsible for conducting public engagement campaigns that are aligned with the goals of iGEM HUMAN PRACTICE (https://igem.org/Human_Practices). For this subteam, we are looking for students who have a passion for scientific research and are concerned about the societal implications of scientific advancement.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis (we will review applications as they come in) and will close on February 16th, 11:59 pm EST.
Note: recruitment for wet-lab student researchers will begin later this year.

Innovating with empathy: Student-led research team earns silver for novel bacterial treatment McMaster SynBio, a student-led research team, has received an award for their work on a biological therapy project targeting inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

💙We are so excited to announce that we have won a Silver Medal in the 2021 iGEM competition, for our project on the targeted elimination of the invasive Ecoli strain, AIEC, in inflammatory bowel disease.
💙iGEM is the largest synthetic biology competition in the world, with more than 300 international participating teams representing Universities such as Harvard, MIT, and more.
💙This is the first time that a team from McMaster has achieved a Silver Medal in the iGEM competition and we could not be more proud.
💙This achievement would not have been possible without our amazing and dedicated team who worked for about 2 years to prepare for iGEM. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our amazing sponsors who provided us with support along this process.
