Today at Council, Hamilton Water and Engineering Services staff were recognized with a commendation for their 2026 Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) Award for Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair! 🏆

This award recognizes the emergency rehabilitation of the Woodward Greenhill Transmission Main, a critical piece of infrastructure that serves approximately 60% of Hamilton residents and helps deliver safe, reliable drinking water across the city.

Faced with an active leak and multiple high-risk sections, City staff worked alongside project partners to complete complex emergency repairs and rehabilitation within a 70-working-day window—with no service disruptions, no safety incidents and full environmental compliance.

This achievement reflects the professionalism, expertise, innovation and teamwork of staff across multiple City divisions, as well as the support of our project partners.

Drop a 👏 in the comments to help us congratulate everyone involved in this award-winning project!

Even “flushable” wipes don’t break down properly—they can clog your pipes and the City’s water and wastewater systems. Only flush p*e, poo and paper. Learn more at: hamilton.ca/flushables

Older homes in Hamilton may still have lead water service pipes — here’s what to do if you think you’ve found one 👇

The best long-term solution is to replace your lead water service line. When homeowners replace the private portion of the pipe, the City will replace the public portion as well.

Hamilton Water also offers:
✔️ Free Check Size and Type Inspections
✔️ A Lead Water Service Replacement Loan Program for eligible homeowners

Even if you have a lead service pipe, tap water remains safe for bathing, showering, brushing teeth, washing dishes and laundry.

Learn more at hamilton.ca/LeadPipes (link in bio) or call 905-546-2489 to book a free inspection.

This week, approximately 2,000 Grade 4 students joined Hamilton Water’s Annual Children’s Water Festival at Pier 4 Park. Drop a 💧 in the comments if you remember attending as a young Hamiltonian!

Students explored hands-on, outdoor activities focused on water conservation, environmental awareness, science, technology and protection — learning practical ways to care for and protect Hamilton’s water resources.

Now in its 18th year, the festival helps students understand how their actions can make a difference. It encourages them to bring what they’ve learned back to their schools, families and communities, and to become leaders in protecting water for the future.

A special thank you to Elaine Lee, Indigenous Traditional Helper, for sharing traditional water teachings and a drum performance with students during the festival.

We’re grateful to all the students, teachers, volunteers, staff, community partners and sponsors who helped make this year’s event a success!

Behind-the-scenes look at our Proactive Leak Detection Program — a key strategy in addressing the ongoing issue of aging infrastructure. 🎧

Leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water without anyone noticing. Before launching the proactive program, Hamilton Water had a reactive leak detection where leaks were identified and repaired after receiving a call or complaint related to low water pressure, noise in pipes or a visual water leak.

Now with specialized acoustic equipment and highly trained staff, Hamilton Water can get ahead of pipe breaks and focus on repair, rehabilitation, and replacement before leaks become a big problem.

The program has also reduced risks to City infrastructure, including the pipe network. It prevents erosion of pipe bedding, which can lead to major pipe breaks and damage to the foundations of roads, bridges, buildings, and other structures.
