Photos of our walleye spawning area on Lake Niapenco. Constructed to take advantage of the prevailing winds to encourage oxygenation of eggs, and also protect shoreline from a serious erosion problem.
Together with our stocking program, we have now established
a healthy population of walleye in the lake.

The bite was a little slow today at Binbrook.
The crappie being caught were generally a decent size.
They were having better luck earlier in the day.
Of course there is lots of ice.
Cool temperature, but nice day to be outdoors.

During the fish survey at Binbrook Conservation Area, the biologists discovered this pike.
It doesn't seem to have been hampered by it's injury? deformity?I
Very unusual. Something we seldom see at Binbrook.

With the historic low water level at Lake Niapenco this fall, the biologists made some interesting discoveries during their operations.
Among them was this northern pike skull with a lure lodged in it's throat.
The result of broken fishing line, it was unable to dislodge the lure, and starved to death.
( we washed the lure to make it visable)

An unusual find in Lake Niapenco.
This fish is called a quillback. It was discovered in the catch of our biologists during their survey.
It is a native species of the sucker family. A bottom feeder, it prefers environments
that are clear, with sandy bottoms, which bodes well for our efforts of improving water quality
at Binbrook.

Just a sample of the fish that are being documented,tagged and released by biologists at Lake Niapenco.
They are part of a year long study to initiate a fisheries plan for Binbrook Conservation Area.

❄️BINBROOK ICE FISHING IS OPEN! ❄️

Starting January 16, 2025, the Lake Niapenco reservoir is open for ice fishing! Dress in layers, grab a friend, and enjoy a day on the ice. Please remember:

🏠 Anglers can bring their own equipment and collapsable ice huts. All personal belongings must be taken with you when you leave.
🚗 No motorized vehicles are allowed on the reservoir.
🎣 We encourage visitors to practice catch-and-release fishing.

📅 Hours: 8 AM – 6 PM daily
🎟 Daily admission fees apply

Ice conditions are monitored daily. There are signs located at the main entrance and at access points along the shoreline indicating if the reservoir is open or closed. Stay updated on any changes or closures by following us on social media or visiting the NPCA website.
