BALANCE CHALLENGE: spelling your name with the bottom of your foot (you can do capital letters, cursive, or a combo - go wild), repeat on both sides, and progress to the next level

Stability is truly the foundation to strength training, it’s so important and has SO much transfer into sport and in life, so even though this is a fun little challenge to try, it also is a great drill to use in a warm-up or training session to work on single leg stability

TIPS/ CUES:
- Keep a soft bend in the anchor leg
- Hands on hips
- Keep eyes glued to a spot on the ground (at least for the first 2 levels)
- Think about spelling the letter with your heel so your whole leg moves to write it

What would level 04 be?👀

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the team for the past 6 seasons, and for the last 4 we’ve hosted the McMaster Performance & Wellness Workshop in partnership with the kinesiology department to provide an opportunity for like-minded professionals in the field to come together to learn, connect, and collaborate

Every year we’ve levelled it up in different ways and this year is no exception with a heavy-hitter line-up of speakers for year 5!

Join us on Sunday May 24th at the HPA at from 8-5PM for a solid day of continuing education - comment (or DM me) the word WORKSHOP and I’ll send the link to register 🫡

Simple doesn’t always mean easy …

I think what makes the difference between a good program and great program is ex*****on - a program followed (no matter how simple) is going to serve you better than a fancy program that takes too much thought

Most principles in strength training are relatively simple, but what makes it challenging is the discipline to be consistent, the effort that goes into moving weight well, and the intent to execute things to 100% of your ability on a given day - that stuff is hard and it shouldn’t be overlooked!

You’ve heard me say it before …

Do the simple things (squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, carry, rotate, jump, walk, sprint, MOVE)

Do them well (move with intent, focus on form/ technique, use a weight that’s challenging)

Do them often (be consistent, show up even when you don’t feel like it, take small steps)

It’s not fancy, it’s not sexy, and it isn’t click-baity, but it’s the truth and I’m going to keep shouting it from the rooftops

Keep it simple. Follow a program. Focus on your intent. Get strong. Be an athlete. Have some fun doing it!🪩

Choose your cue for the HIP HINGE

Not every cue is a one-size-fits-all - for some it will click, and for some it will cause confusion, and that’s why it’s important to build a toolbox of different cues and teaching tools when working with different humans!

The 3 cues listed aren’t the only ones available to use, but these are 3 that have come up with my athletes in life this past week …

01. Push butt back to wall behind - this gives a physical landmark for someone to move their body to (you could even have the physically touch the wall as they push back)

02. Spread the cheeks - this one might be a bit aggressive but it sure is clear!

03. Push hips back like you’re closing the top drawer of a dresser - gives individuals a visual and a comparison of when they’ve potentially used this movement in everyday life

Cueing is actually such a great way to get creative as a coach - if one cue doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean the person will never get it, you just need to dig into the toolbox to find something else that’s relatable for them so you can give them that lightbulb moment💡

P.S. it’s generally the sillier, relatable, and external cues that are going to be the most memorable!
