Tena & Felix
A little sneak peek from last week in Mexico at Riviera Maya Hacienda. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere made the entire day feel effortless.
It was an honor capturing such a genuine connection and all the moments shared with family and friends. A truly special wedding from start to finish.

I’m really starting to love these studio sessions.
Had such a great time with Tena and Felix — they’re getting married in Mexico this March at La Villa Joya in Cancun, one of the most beautiful venues you could imagine. It’s only a few weeks away now, and we honestly feel so lucky to be part of it.
Counting down the days to celebrate them in the sun.

Why Having a Wedding Planner Matters (From a Wedding Photographer’s Perspective)
As a wedding photographer, my job is to document your day as it naturally unfolds — the emotions, the moments, the details you’ve spent months planning. What many couples don’t realize until after the wedding, though, is how deeply the structure of the day affects what can actually be captured.
This is where wedding planners become invaluable.
Photographers Are Not Wedding Planners
Let’s clear up a common misconception: photographers are not wedding planners.
Yes, we help with timelines.
Yes, we give guidance on lighting and positioning.
Yes, we’ll step in when things start to feel chaotic.
But our primary responsibility is to observe and capture, not to manage vendors, cue entrances, gather family members, track delays, or troubleshoot logistics. When photographers are forced into the role of planner, something always gives — and more often than not, it’s the photos.
What Often Goes Wrong Without a Planner
When there’s no wedding planner (or at least a dedicated day-of coordinator), photographers frequently see the same issues arise:
The timeline runs late with no buffer
Family members aren’t ready or can’t be found
No one is assigned to organize group photos
Vendors aren’t communicating with each other
Important moments happen unexpectedly or out of order
In these situations, photographers are forced to react instead of create.
We may be photographing detail shots when the bride is suddenly ready.
We may be setting up portraits while family formals are happening elsewhere.
We may miss a reaction not because we weren’t capable — but because no one was directing the flow of the day.
Why Direction Is Everything for Photography
Great wedding photography isn’t just about talent or gear — it’s about timing and direction.
When there’s a planner:
Moments are announced and anticipated
Portrait time is protected
Family formals are organized efficiently
Transitions are smooth
Everyone knows where they need to be
This allows photographers to:
Be fully present
Capture moments intentionally
Focus on creativity instead of logistics
Deliver a gallery that truly reflects what the couple envisioned
Without that direction, photographers are often put in impossible situations — expected to capture everything while also managing everyone.
When Expectations and Reality Don’t Match
One of the hardest parts of this job is hearing couples say, “I wish we had more photos of…”
In many cases, those moments did happen — just without structure, warning, or direction. And unfortunately, photographers can’t capture what they don’t have the opportunity to anticipate.
This isn’t about blame. It’s about understanding that a well-supported wedding day leads to better photos.
The Planner–Photographer Partnership
When photographers and planners work together, magic happens.
Planners protect the timeline.
Photographers protect the memories.
It’s a partnership that allows both roles to shine — and gives couples the experience (and gallery) they truly deserve.
Final Thoughts
Hiring a wedding planner isn’t just about reducing stress — it’s about setting your entire day up for success.
If photography is important to you, then structure, direction, and coordination are just as important as the camera behind the lens.
As photographers, we’ll always go above and beyond — but the best weddings are the ones where we’re free to do what we do best: tell your story beautifully, without chaos getting in the way.
