For June's Sadya: Filipino Conversation Circle and Filipino Heritage Month, please join us in a free screening of "How I Got Here" documentary series, on Thursday, June 11, at 6:00 pm - Hamilton Public Library Central.

Angeline Pink, travels with her mother, Tita Nelia Ibasco, to the Philippines, to reconnect with their Filipino heritage and learn more about her mother’s life before coming to Canada. A story about family, connection, grief, love, and more.

A short Q & A with Angeline and Tita Nelia will follow, moderated by Tanim's Tita Jennie.

Bahay kubo, kahit munti
Ang halaman doon ay sari-sari.
Singkamas at talong, sigarilyas at mani
Sitaw, bataw, patani.

At saka mayroon pang labanos, mustasa, sibuyas, kamatis, bawang at luya sa paligid-ligid ay puro linga.

"Folk songs like our folk stories are repositories of people's memories"

Stephen Acabado posted about the possible origins of the 18 plants. Our favorite singkamas in the atsara and lumpia for instance is jicama in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. It has its origin from Mesoamerica, and except for upo or wax gourd, the rest of the plants are from the Americas, Africa or mainland Asia.

Acabado said: "The idea of the pure Filipino, discovered and civilized only by the western colonizers must now be laid to rest. Instead, we should embrace that our identities like the mga halaman (plants) in the munting bahay kubo (small nipa hut) are results of long history of living interactions resulting to a sari-sari, a layered and diverse cultural group of people who continue to evolve, enrich, and emancipate."

In the Tagalog language, Tanim primarily means plant or to plant something. 🌱🌿🌾🍃

We at Filipinas of HamOnt are excited to share the work rooted from the past five years and the name change to Tanim, embodying what we are currently doing and hope to be.

Tanim is a beginning. Tanim is investing. Tanim is the unseen growth of something that will surface one day. Tanim is loving, attentive care and gentle nurturing. Tanim Collective will continue the work and build on what FoH started.

Tanim Collective is a community focused on learning Filipino language, history and culture.

We are thankful for your time, energy, love and support and we are looking forward to this new journey.

We would like to thank McMaster Office of Community Engagment, SACHA and Hamilton Public Library. These organizations made it possible for Sadya to continue.
