đ Life Updateđ
As I begin a new academic chapter, Iâll be officially closing my practice as of November 30, 2025.
Itâs been an honour to do this work and walk alongside so many incredible clients. Thank you for your trust, support, and connection over the years â Iâm deeply grateful.
Onward to new beginnings!đŤ
Horses are our safe spaceâthey bring peace, comfort, and that special connection we crave. đ´â¤ď¸
But sometimes, they also stir up stress and tough emotions. Itâs that push and pull we all feel as riders.
The magic happens when we give ourselves permission to feel bothâthe calm and the challenge.
Understanding these emotions helps us ride with more awareness, confidence, and compassionâfor ourselves and our horses.
So today, honour your whole experience. The ups and the downs. Thatâs where real growth begins. đżâ¨
đ§ đ´ Riders, Whatâs Your Pre-Show Routine?
Our horses have theirsâwhether it's a quiet hand walk, a ring ride, or a favorite treat before heading into the ring. Their routine helps them settle, focus, and prepare to perform.
But what about us?
As riders, our mental and emotional state directly impacts our performance and our horses. If we want to ride at our best, we need to build a pre-show routine that supports our mind, body, and focus.
Here are a few ideas to consider:
â
Light breakfast + hydration
â
Calming music or a power playlist
â
Mindfulness or visualization before tacking up
â
A mantra or word to center your focus
â
Gear up slowlyâlet it become part of your mental prep
â
3 deep breaths before entering the ring
â
A quiet moment with your horseâjust you two
The goal? To train your mind like you train your bodyâso when show day comes, your mindset is already in sync with peak performance.
đ§ââď¸ Consistency builds confidence. Routines regulate nerves. Calm minds make clear decisions.
đ If youâre ready to build your own ideal pre-show routine, letâs work togetherâthis is where sport psychology meets performance clarity.
Success in sport is often seen as winning, placing first, or bringing home a ribbon. đ
But thatâs not the full story
Success can also look like:
⨠Showing up even when you're anxious
⨠Staying connected with your horse, not just in control
⨠Learning from a mistake and trying again
⨠Choosing progress over perfection
Defining success on YOUR OWN TERMS is powerful. It shifts the focus from comparison to growthâfrom external outcomes to internal wins.
Because real success is personal, it's the quiet courage, the mindset shifts, and the moments that matter to you.
Celebrate what success looks like in your world. Thatâs where real confidence begins. đ´đą
You wouldnât head into the ring without checking your tackâŚ
So why go in without checking in on your mindset? đ§ đ´
The truth isâyour mental game matters.
Confidence, focus, calm⌠they donât just âhappen.â
Theyâre skills you can buildâjust like your seat or your connection with your horse.
As a therapist who gets the equestrian world, Iâm here to help you strengthen the most important part of your ride: you.
Letâs build a mindset that supports your goalsâin and out of the saddle. đŞ
Emotions have a way of showing up at the most inconvenient timesâlike in the middle of the show ring or during a lesson. đ
This sport comes with intensity: pressure, passion, nerves, frustration, joy. Itâs a lot. And as riders, weâre not just managing our own experienceâweâre also thinking, problem-solving, and supporting our horse in real time.
Thatâs why emotional control matters. Not by pushing feelings down, but by learning how to hold space for them. đ§ đŹ
In the moment, try this:
⨠Take a deep breath
⨠Soften your muscles
⨠Name the emotion you're feeling
These small steps can help you reset and stay present for the ride.
Thereâs always time to process more fully afterwards. What matters in the moment is staying groundedânot perfect, just present.

At Evolution Counselling, our mission is to help riders get ring readyâwhether youâre preparing for a competition or simply aiming to improve your everyday ride.
Getting ring ready isnât just about perfecting your skills or packing your tackâitâs about cultivating the right mindset, building confidence, and deepening your connection with your horse.
We believe riding should be fun and fulfilling. That means enjoying every moment in the saddle and appreciating the amazing partnership between horse and riderâthe very reason we all fell in love with this sport.
By focusing on both skill and joy, we help you bring your best ride forward while nurturing a lasting love for the sport and your equine partner.
Letâs make every ride an opportunity to grow, learn, and enjoy the journeyâwhether at home or in the show ring. đ§ â¨đ¤Š
Visualization is a powerful mental skill used by athletes across all sportsâincluding riders. đ§ đ
By mentally rehearsing each step before performing, athletes train their minds and bodies to execute skills smoothly and confidently.
â
For riders, this means vividly imagining:
â
Sitting tall and balanced
â
Shoulders relaxed
â
Core engaged
â
Hands soft and steady
â
Eyes focused on the goal
â
This mental practice reduces anxiety, sharpens focus, and builds muscle memoryâso you can perform your best under pressure.
â
Ride it in your mind first. Then ride it for real.
Sometimes life outside the arena just sneaks inâand thatâs normal.
Your coach is there to help with your riding, but theyâre not your therapist.
Taking care of your mental and emotional health is just as important as your physical health.
You deserve to show up fullyâfor you and your horse.
Raise your hand if a riding lesson has ever turned into a bit of an unplanned therapy session đđťââď¸đđť
Riding comes with a whole mix of emotionsâ fear, frustration, doubt, low motivationâand sometimes it feels like youâre carrying it all alone.
The truth is, many riders feel this way but rarely discuss it.
Itâs okay not to have it all figured out.
These feelings are part of the journey.
Opening up and sharing what youâre going through can help you feel less isolated â and give you space to work through it.
Therapy is a valuable tool to support your mental and emotional well-being, both in and out of the saddle.
If any of this feels familiar, know that youâre not alone. đ

Itâs so easy to get caught up rushing toward the next goal.
But I want you to pause for a moment and really notice how far youâve come â
all the hard work đŞ, the progress đ, and every small win đ along the way.
A ribbon is nice, sure, but it doesnât define your story.
Youâre doing better than you realize.
So today, give yourself permission to celebrate that â¨
