We are heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of a Salty alum, Kai.

Just over 3 years ago, Kai was rescued from our local shelter, where he was on the euthanasia list. It wasn’t Kai’s fault. Like too many, he simply ended up in the wrong circumstances during an already overwhelming animal welfare crisis.

Kai’s adopters, Melanie and Steve, had recently lost their first Salty alum, Kia. Kia was also pulled from the same shelter in 2020. She meant the world to them and was sadly taken far too soon after a battle with cancer.

After losing Kia, they had mentioned possibly being ready to open their home to a foster. Then Kai’s stray intake photo popped up. He looked so much like Kia that it felt like a sign. It didn’t take long for them to decide to give him a chance.

And what a life they gave him.

His humans put so much love, time and effort into helping Kai thrive. He became the ultimate cottage dog and was one very loved and spoiled boy.

When we heard the news, we were devastated for them. We can’t imagine the heartbreak of losing another beloved family member so soon.

We hope his family can find comfort in knowing that Kai went from a shelter where he almost never got his chance to three years of waking up every day feeling he had won the doggy jackpot.

We will forever be grateful to Melanie and Steve for giving Kai the life he deserved and loving him so deeply.

Sending all our love to his humans and everyone who will miss this very special boy.

Give your babies those extra snuggles. They are never, ever with us long enough.

This is it. Our Salty “make it or break it” fundraiser.

If we can raise $4,000, we can reopen intake. If we can’t, I’m going to have to take that as a sign that Salty is down to its last days.

Keeping a rescue going has become incredibly difficult. We aren’t alone. So many rescues we know are struggling with the same thing.

I’m really not trying to guilt anyone. If you’re unable to donate, I completely understand. It’s a hard time for many of us, and asking for donations isn’t easy.

Unfortunately, the reality is that we cannot responsibly take in animals without having the funds to care for them.

Animals across Ontario continue losing their lives. Happy, loving animals are euthanized in shelters or left outside to survive on their own. We want to keep saying yes. We just need the means to do it.

Salty is volunteer run and receives no government funding.

Right now, our vet balance is $792.86. We also have multiple spay and neuters to cover, and we’re hoping to help with some of recently adopted Shuggie’s surgery for her luxating patella, which is estimated at $5,600.

Adoption fees help, but they rarely cover the full cost of an animal’s care.

We’re hoping this raffle can help us get back to saying yes.

Mama Sunny, Suri and Soleil were off to the vet on Thursday for their first round of vetting.

I can’t believe these big kids are already 8 weeks old!

We’re officially beginning to accept preadoption applications for them. We do have a few people interested, so please keep that in mind.

We also have some exciting news coming up for a few other Salties, if all goes as planned!

Tomorrow, we’ll be launching a fundraiser that will determine whether Salty is able to reopen intake or not. We would love to be able to help more animals like Sunny and her babies, but we have to make sure we can provide every animal with what they deserve.

We really need those shares and engagement so we can finally find Dale his forever!

He’s officially the last pick of the litter. It’s such a shame because he’s such a special little guy.

Dale is 4 months old now. He was found trying to survive outside in the Westdale area with his mom and siblings.

He has been making a ton of progress in his foster home. His foster mom Kayla Tamae has had nothing but great things to say about him. He’s become a big snuggler and is definitely a favourite out of the many kitties she’s fostered!

He’s such a silly guy and such a Dale.

We think he could work in a home with kids or dogs if they have people willing to put in the extra time to help him become a brave boy. Quieter would be preferred at first but once he gain that confidence he’s a whole new guy. He would love a playful kitty friend or he could even be adopted with his mama Kip. He likes noisy toys, and cuddles will be a must.

It may take him a little time to come around at first, but then he becomes the biggest love bug. He just needs the right people to give him a chance. Our most scared, previously outdoor babies always end up being the biggest snugglers.

We are looking for forever homes that will put them first and give them anything they may need, and more, for their whole lives.

They will only go to adopters who are prepared, willing, and able to work with any health or behavioural issues should problems arise in the future (and they always do!).

Dale will be fully vetted before adoption is finalized.

Mama Kipling “Kip” is STILL waiting for one whole adoption application to come in with her name on it.

Kip and her 4 babes were living outside in the Westdale area. She’s said to have been outside for quite some time, but she’s social enough that she must have been inside at some point.

She’s been making a lot of progress but can still be shy and does take a little time to warm up and get used to her new environment.

Once you’ve gained her trust, she’s a very sweet girl and has the happiest purr. A bit of patience is always worth it.

We know she has a ton of potential with the right person willing to give her a chance!

I wish more people were open to the shy guys. With a bit of time and understanding they always come around.

Kippie has had some intros to the resident kitties, and she would enjoy a cat friend in the home. Or she could be adopted with her son, Dale!

She may work in a home with a dog, depending on the dog and with time to get used to them.

Kiddos would be similar. If it were a calmer home with a family willing to put in the extra socializing work, it’s likely she would adjust after some time!

Overall, Kippie is a sweet Tort that just needs a little love and time to come around. She would prefer a quieter, slower paced lifestyle.

Most importantly, she deserves a family committed to giving her only the best for the rest of her life.
