I popped into my favourite secondhand bookshop (Pickwick Books) yesterday and was so pleased to find this title on the shelf!

When I was a sheltered teen in rural Ontario and had absolutely no idea what to do with my life, I happened upon the movie "Wonder Boys." I adored the character of Crabtree (Tripp's editor), and I saw how editing could be the perfect fit for my personal brand of chaos, creativity, and perfectionism (just without the 💊❄️).

🚧 Rules are made to be broken...sometimes. 🚧

It's fine to break from grammar rules and writing conventions—and please question anyone who insists it's NEVER okay!—but it should be done with intention.

Understanding the rule that you're breaking is the critical difference between a flawlessly executed style choice that makes an impact and sloppy writing that may trip readers up.

Knowing and understanding your target audience is also an important factor in deciding which rules to break. Don't even try pushing boundaries in academic writing. Reserve jargon for business writing within your industry, because it will frustrate a general audience. If your homepage copy isn't written in plain language, few users will stick around long enough to see what else you have to say. But if a character in your literary fiction WIP is really excited and perhaps even in a manic state and is speaking super fast without taking a breath and you want readers to feel that through their dialogue—go for it!

It's a lot to manage, but an editor can make it easier. I live for helping writers craft perfect prose, and I'll help you learn how to break rules effectively!

In the past few years I've developed a deep appreciation of YA and it's super exciting to me that teens have access to so many insightful stories where they can see themselves reflected in the pages.
