Three Pulse Lab at McMaster University members are featured in the Fall Issue of Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience!

Co-edited by Pulse Director Dr. Paula Gardner and Dr. Sarah Kember, "Probing the System: Feminist Complications of Automated Technologies, Flows, and Practices of Every Day Life" provides rich critical feminist analyses of data, surveillance, and new media practices.

Gardner and Pulse's creative technologist, Stephen Surlin, are also highlighted in an image + text works article with Shu Lea Cheang ("3x3x6-- 9 Sq.m. and 6 surveillance cameras").

Pulse project and grants manager Jess Rauchberg's book review of André Brock's "Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures" (NYU Press, 2020) is also included in the issue.

In recognition of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, September 30, 2021, Pulse Lab members are hopeful that our community will take the opportunity to join in recognitions and trainings offered by Indigenous communities regarding the history and impact of residential schools, treaty obligations, and other crucial issues, in Ontario and across Turtle Island.

Our colleagues at the McMaster Indigenous Studies Program have recommended resources offered by the Woodland Cultural Center, including a vitural residential school tour.

Dr. Selina Mudavanhu, Pulse Lab member and Assistant Professor in Communication Studies and Media Arts, at McMaster University, shares an update on the Mac I Stories project:

"This summer, Dr. Mudavanhu is convening digital storytelling workshops for racialized international students studying at McMaster University. These workshops - which take place online - are part of her project funded by the Arts Research Board that explores the abovementioned students’ experiences of being human in racialized bodies both on and off-campus. The first of two workshops took place on June 4, 2021, and was attended by students from countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean islands, and South Asia. In addition to introducing participants to the digital storytelling methodology, a lot of time was dedicated to sharing experiences. In preparation for the second workshop to be held in the first week of July 2021, students will decide on stories they want to tell, collect the visuals they want to use and download various open-source software."
