Although writing tends to be a solo activity, it just works better when you are with other word smiths.

The Illusion of Talent 05/27/2026

From baseball tryouts to stubborn clients, my latest blog post dives into the Dunning-Kruger effect, fixed mindsets and why true ex*****on means learning to love the grind.

The Illusion of Talent Why wanting the trophy is easy, but wanting the grind is everything. Exploring the illusions of talent from youth baseball to business lending.

As an author, I know that a good story is usually ruined by a plot hole. As a Loan Portfolio Manager, I know that a good business is usually ruined by a budget hole. We all plan for the 'Main Characters' of our expenses—the payroll, the rent, the marketing. But businesses, much like novels, are often undone by the minor characters you didn’t give enough screen time to. I originally wrote this piece for The Hub NS, but I’m sharing it here because whether you’re writing a book or launching a brand, it’s the things you didn’t see coming that usually provide the most drama.

I am currently navigating a world where people want the pie but refuse to touch the flour. Whether its the 'undefeated' musician who never stepped on the stage, or Joe waiting from a sign from a pigeon, the problem is the same: no buy-in. Today I'm looking at why risk is the only entrance fee that matters. Expect zero Austen, a few hard truths, and a look at why my ex is the patron saint of the sidelines.

Usually a sanctuary for deep thoughts, but today we are pivoting from metaphors to margins
In my day job, I help entrepreneurs realize that financing is the secret sauce that keeps a startup from becoming a very expensive hobby. I originally wrote this for The Hub NS, but I am also sharing it here because whether we are drafting a novel or a business plan, at some point we need to stop bootstrapping and start buildling.

Ready to turn your "I should really write that" into "I’m actually writing this"? ✍️✨
Writing is usually a solo sport, but the best way to keep your momentum high is to find your tribe. Whether you’re working on a novel, a business blog, or just trying to start a journaling habit, the Dartmouth Open Writing Group is here to help you get the ink flowing.
What does a meeting look like?
We’ve designed these two hours to be productive, inspiring, and completely low-pressure:
The Warm-Up: we kick off with a quick writing exercise to bypass your inner critic and get your brain moving.
The Resource Share: We’ll briefly discuss the exercise and I'll share some resources or techniques to help you grow your toolkit. (Sharing what you wrote is totally optional!)
The Sprints: A block of dedicated, focused time to work on the exercise or your own current project. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when everyone else in the room is focused, too!
The Huddle: We wrap up with an open chat about our current projects and any hurdles we're facing. It’s the perfect time to lean on the group’s collective experience.
Whether you're a published author or haven't picked up a pen since school, there is a seat for you at the table.
Join us this month!
📅 When: Tuesday, April 21
⏰ Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
📍 Where: Alderney Gate Public Library (Community Room, Floor 1)
