On June 21, we honour National Indigenous Peoples Day.
For generations, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities have welcomed the summer season by celebrating their distinct cultures, histories, and traditions. National Indigenous Peoples Day was chosen to align with the summer solstice, a sacred time of spiritual renewal, connection to the land, and respect for the sun as a life-giving force.
As Canadians, we must continue to acknowledge the deep impacts of colonization, the residential school system, and ongoing systemic inequities. This is especially important amid growing, divisive rhetoric surrounding unmarked graves—rhetoric that seeks to undermine the truths shared by Survivors in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report. As Kimberly Murray reminds us, “Denialism is violence. Denialism is calculated. Denialism is harmful. Denialism is hate.”
Moving beyond denialism means committing to active, lived reconciliation. It means shifting attention away from harmful narratives and centring Indigenous voices and experiences. Here at home, that includes learning from Mi’kmaq leaders whose ancestors have cared for these lands for millennia, and celebrating the ongoing vibrancy of Indigenous art, language, and community strength.

💖
Pam, Lisa, and Jackie were back at Phoenix Youth Programs last week, serving up a favourite comfort meal: breakfast for dinner! 🍳🥞
The menu featured eggs, pancakes, sausages, and potatoes, providing a hearty and delicious meal for the youth to enjoy.
We’re grateful to these ladies for continuing to give their time and talents in support of our community. Small acts of service can make a meaningful difference, and we’re proud to support the important work being done at Phoenix.

Huge thanks to the Halifax West High School Interact Club for months of hard work planning, and executing a hygiene drive for us!
Your efforts brought in 4,000 essential items—shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and more—and your help sorting everything made it easy to get these supplies to youth across our programs.
We’re so grateful for your leadership and support! Keep up the great work.
