Summer digging season is in full swing.

If your project plans have changed since your original locate request, you may need updated locates before continuing work.

This includes changes to:
▪️ Dig area or location
▪️ Depth of the dig
▪️ Adding more fencing
▪️Extra landscaping

Even small changes can place digging closer to underground utilities that were not identified in the original locate.

Don’t assume previous locates still apply.

Before continuing your project, make sure your location information matches the work being completed.

During Trench Safety Stand Down Week, June 15–19, Ontario One Call is reminding excavators, contractors, and crews that safe excavation starts before the ground is broken.

This week encourages the construction and utility industries to pause work and focus on trenching hazards, protective systems such as sloping, shielding, and shoring, and safe excavation practices that help prevent injuries and fatalities on job sites.

A critical part of trench and excavation safety is knowing what’s below before digging begins.

Before any excavation project:
▪️Request locates
▪️ Identify underground infrastructure
▪️ Follow safe digging procedures
▪️ Protect workers on site

Trenching hazards are preventable with proper planning, training, and safety protocols.

Ontario One Call reminds homeowners to stay cautious following recent reports of door-to-door contractors delivering poor-quality work or incomplete work.

While most contractors follow proper safety procedures, these situations can pose a serious public safety risk, including potential damage to underground gas lines, electrical cables, and other critical infrastructure.

️❗Any project involving digging requires a locate request.

Before work begins, always confirm that:
▪️A locate request has been submitted at OntarioOneCall.ca
▪️Locate markings (paint or flags) and/or locate documentation have been received and reviewed by your contractor before work begins.

If a contractor suggests proceeding without locates, this is unsafe and not compliant with Ontario regulations.

Digging without locates can damage underground infrastructure and put your safety, property, and community at risk.

No digging should take place without first submitting a locate request. Click Before You Dig – It’s The Law at OntarioOneCall.ca.

Taking a moment to verify this step can help you prevent unsafe work, costly damage, and project issues.
