After more than 50 years on Queen West, Steve’s Music is closing its Toronto retail store. The legendary shop at Queen and Spadina will shut down as part of a broader restructuring that also affects locations in Ottawa and Montreal.

The company says it’s facing mounting financial pressure and disruption in the retail sector, prompting an in-store liquidation sale of up to 50 percent off before closures roll out over the coming months. Only the flagship Montreal location on Saint Catherine Street is expected to remain open, while online sales will continue.

Founded in 1965, Steve’s became a staple during Toronto’s punk and indie music boom in the 1970s. Its closure marks the end of an era for Queen West’s music scene.

🚀 Beastie Boys – “Intergalactic” Live, 1998
When the Beastie Boys dropped “Intergalactic” in 1998, it was more than a single—it was a cultural explosion. On stage, the trio turned the robotic hook and sci-fi beats into pure chaos and joy. Dressed in their signature jumpsuits, they brought hip-hop energy to rock festivals, proving that their sound could bend genres and electrify any crowd. The performance wasn’t just music—it was a spectacle, with fans bouncing like they were in zero gravity.

Watch from the first second and then restart:🖤 This was wild.
I was close to the front and we (the whole crowd) could not even lift our arms up. The crowd moved all at once. All together. As if we were all one.
My brother, Chad was near me the whole time and probably watching my back. I had no idea. At one point, all I see is a guy’s back coming down from above me; he landed on my head and I went down. Next thing I feel is someone pulling me up by the scruff of me neck. It was my own brother! He saved me once again! Can you believe of all these people, it was my brother who picked me up. I was amazed. And I carried on jumping with the crowd. The power of the music at concerts like this was like nothing else. It was addictive and empowering. These memories even give me that charge and a feeling of nostalgia too. Wild times! XO
