Our student Emma is hard at work today, using a pencil to sketch out her latest design directly onto coated copper.
She’s prepping this piece for vitreous enamel (also known as porcelain enamel). This amazing process involves fusing powdered glass to a metal substrate by firing it at intense temperatures between 750 and 850 °C (1,380 and 1,560 °F)! The powder melts, flows, and hardens into a smooth, incredibly durable, glassy coating.Fun fact: The word vitreous comes from the Latin word for "glassy," while enamel traces back to the Old High German word smelzan, meaning "to smelt."Can't wait to see how Emma's decorative piece turns out once it comes out of the kiln! 🔥
