Richard Franklin Carson, known affectionately to friends and family as Rick, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Rick was born on July 5, 1941, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Gladys and Richard Carson. Rick's warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him.
Rick's journey began in the heart of Canada, where he attended St. James Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue many courses in the insurance industry, culminating in his Fellowship from the Insurance Institute of Canada. Rick's illustrious career in insurance began with Norwich Union in Winnipeg. Over the years, he made significant contributions to Hartford Fire Insurance Company, Osler Hammond and Nanton Insurance Limited, Continental Insurance Company, and Great Lakes Paper Company Ltd, where he excelled as Risk and Insurance Manager. Rick concluded his professional life as a respected Branch Manager and Senior Vice-President at AON in Thunder Bay, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and mentorship.
Outside the office, Rick was a man of many passions. He was an avid golfer, a dedicated hockey referee, and a runner who completed five marathons. His love for travel was shared with his beloved wife Beverley, as they embarked on numerous adventures to Florida and various other destinations all over the world. An accomplished artist, Rick found joy in the beauty of creation, with his black and white sketches. His appreciation for the arts extended to the theatre and the local symphony orchestra, where he was a familiar face.
Rick's faith was a cornerstone of his life, deeply involved with St. Thomas' Anglican Church and its choir family. His gentle and kind spirit shone through in his devotion to his grandchildren, whom he adored bringing on trips, supporting at sporting and music events, and providing countless rides to and from the pool and arena.
Rick's life was a tapestry of love and dedication to his family. He leaves behind his cherished wife, Beverley Carson; his daughters, Michelle Carson and Erin Puhalski (Jim); his grandchildren, Taylor Hay (Heather), Jeremy Hay (Mhel), Benjamin Puhalski, Lindsay Puhalski, and Jamie Puhalski; and his great-grandson, Richard Harper. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Louise Carson; niece, Shannon Carson (Sacha); great-nieces, Hazel and Leah; nephew, Scott Carson (Gisella); great-nephew, Conor; and numerous cousins and other family members who will miss him dearly. Rick was predeceased by his brother, Tom Carson.
Rick's gentle, kind, and generous nature made him a beacon of light in the lives of those around him. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. Richard Franklin Carson's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, corner of Edward and Amelia Streets, celebrated by Rev. Jonathan Blanchard. Reception to follow.
