Starting next week, those with a Disability Tax Credit will automatically receive a one time $150 to help with the cost of the Disability Tax Credit Applications.

Minister Hajdu has announced that starting next week, Canada Disability Benefit recipients will receive a lump sum payment of $150 to help offset the cost associated with obtaining a disability tax credit.

There is no need to apply for this payment – if you have received the benefit, you will get the payment automatically.

AUDIO (CBC Edmonton): Advocacy group addresses growing delays in Alberta's Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program.

Keltie Marshall, a member of parent-led advocacy group Kids Can't Wait AB, recently spoke on CBC's Edmonton AM about an issue facing thousands of Albertan families as their kids head back to school: Waitlisted for FSCD, they don't have the support they need for their kids to be successful at school, at home or in community.

“Kids are going back to school, and unfortunately, if the services aren’t there at home, a lot of that pressure ends up back on schools, and we know teachers and educational assistants are already maxed out,” says [Sylvan Lake Mayor and parent of a child with a disability Megan] Hanson.

Many families of children with disabilities are headed back to school this year without the supports they need for their child to be successful at home, in community or at school. A parent group is calling on the Alberta government to reduce wait times and improve access to FSCD (Family Support for Children with Disabilitie).

We are seeking individuals with previous board governance experience, strong business and community connections, and expertise in areas including legal, finance, business, innovation and entrepreneurship, healthcare, and human resources. Kids Included parents and alumni parents are also encouraged to apply.

Board members serve three-year terms and meet eight times in the early evening between September and June.

Too often, we mistake presence for participation. We invite people with developmental and intellectual disabilities into rooms, have people sit at tables, and then move ahead without really making space for their thoughts, choices, or feelings. Inclusion is not measured by attendance. It is measured by whether someone is given a real way to be understood, and whether others take the time to listen. If you want to know whether someone was truly included, don’t ask if they were there. Ask if they were respected, heard, and able to influence what happened next.
