Experience is a good thing! It means skill, confidence, and knowing your equipment.
But after doing the same task over and over, it’s easy for the brain to say:
“I’ve done this a hundred times.”
That’s when autopilot can sneak in.
Whether you’re operating a bucket truck, forklift, telehandler, skid steer, or MEWP, routine can make real hazards feel invisible. Slopes, blind spots, overhead hazards, unstable ground, load limits, traffic, and changing site conditions still matter every single time.
The machine may be familiar.
The task may be routine.
But the risk is never on vacation.
Refresher training helps experienced operators reset, refocus, and keep the basics from becoming background noise.
Don’t let routine run the machine. Stay sharp, check twice, and keep autopilot off.

MEWP operators: keep your eyes on the path, not just the platform.
Overhead hazards like beams, pipes, sprinklers, ductwork, and electrical services can create serious risks when operators are raising, lowering, driving, or repositioning.
Many incidents happen during routine movement, a quick adjustment, a tight turn, a moment of distraction, or assuming the path is clear.
Before you move, pause and scan:
What is above me?
Where am I going?
What could I contact as I come down?
Safe MEWP operation is about focus, awareness, and controlled movement.
Look up. Look around. Look where you are going.
It's Ask the Instructor time!!
Each installment will highlight a question we often hear in training and break it down with clear, practical advice from our instructors. Our goal is to make safety conversations more accessible and help share knowledge that can be used on the job.
Have a safety or training question? Send it in. It may be featured in a future post!

Forklift pre-use inspections are not just about checking boxes.
Small hydraulic leaks can be easy to miss, especially around cylinders, hoses, fittings, and underneath the truck. But those small signs can point to bigger problems with equipment condition, load control, and workplace safety.
Before operating, take the extra moment to look for wet spots, drips, oily residue, or fresh puddles.
Forklifts do not moisturize. If it is leaking, report it.
Want your team to spot the details that matter? Book forklift training with us and help your operators build safer inspection habits before they get behind the controls.
Always follow your workplace procedures and applicable OHS requirements.

Harness damage is not always obvious. It “looks fine” is not the same as “safe to use.”
Before a worker clips in, a harness should be checked for more than just major tears. UV exposure, chemical contamination, loose stitching, heat damage, worn hardware, and unreadable labels can all be signs that the equipment needs a closer look.
And yes, sometimes the red flag is tiny. A little fray, a stiff patch, a mystery stain, or a buckle that does not move the way it should can tell a much bigger story.
Think of it like a pre-trip inspection for your body’s backup plan. You wouldn't ignore a warning light on your vehicle, so don't ignore warning signs on fall protection equipment!
Our Fall Protection Training helps workers understand how to inspect, fit, and use their equipment properly so they know what to look for before the work begins.
Because when you are working at heights, your harness should be more than just worn. It should be ready.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, the awareness should not.
Mental health is part of workplace safety every day of the year. The stress, pressure, burnout, and personal challenges people carry do not disappear when the month is over.
At Touchback Safety, we believe looking out for one another means more than recognizing visible hazards. It also means noticing when someone may be struggling quietly, making space for honest conversations, and taking the time to check in.
A simple “How are you really doing?” can make a difference.
Let’s continue to build workplaces where people feel seen, supported, and safe long after Mental Health Awareness Month ends!
